What are Zig Zag Eels like?

The Zig Zag Eel, also known as the Tire Track Eel, is a long-bodied freshwater spiny eel with a pointed snout, small eyes and a series of short dorsal, anal and pectoral fin rays. Its warm brown body is marked with winding dark lines and looping bands, creating the distinctive pattern behind its common name. The pattern varies considerably between individuals and can become less sharply defined as the fish matures.

Despite its eel-like shape, this species is not a true eel. It belongs to the spiny eel family, Mastacembelidae, and has a continuous row of small spines along the front portion of its dorsal fin. These spines, together with its elongated body and flexible movements, help it navigate through dense cover and soft riverbed habitats.

Zig Zag Eels are chiefly nocturnal and often spend daylight hours buried in sand or hidden beneath wood, rocks and leaf litter. After dark they become more active, using their sensitive snout and smell to locate worms, crustaceans and other small animals in the substrate.

In the wild, this species is usually encountered alone rather than in a close-knit shoal. It can be secretive when newly introduced, but many individuals become confident enough to appear regularly at feeding time. Large adults are powerful, curious fish and require substantially more space than their slender appearance might suggest.

Where do Zig Zag Eels originate?

Zig Zag Eels are native to tropical and subtropical freshwater habitats across South and Southeast Asia, including parts of India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and the Malay Peninsula. Their broad range includes rivers, floodplains, streams and still or gently flowing waters.

What water temperature suits Zig Zag Eels?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range is best for Zig Zag Eels?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

Do Zig Zag Eels need company of their own kind?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

How should a Zig Zag Eel aquarium be set up?

An adult Zig Zag Eel should be kept in at least a 450-litre aquarium, with a footprint of approximately 180 by 60 cm; a longer and wider tank is preferable for exceptionally large specimens. Use a secure, tightly fitting lid because spiny eels are capable escape artists. Provide a deep layer of smooth sand or very fine rounded substrate for burrowing, along with sturdy driftwood, smooth rocks, caves and dense areas of plant cover. Leave open floor space for nocturnal exploration, maintain gentle to moderate circulation and avoid sharp décor that could damage the eel's skin.

How large can Zig Zag Eels become?

Up to about 90 cm (35.4 inches) in length in the wild, although many aquarium specimens remain closer to 45–60 cm (18–24 inches). Females are often heavier-bodied and may grow larger than males.

What should Zig Zag Eels eat?

Zig Zag Eels are carnivores that naturally feed on worms, insect larvae, crustaceans and small aquatic animals. Offer varied meaty foods such as earthworms, bloodworms, blackworms, chopped prawns, mussel and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets. Feed after dark or when the aquarium lights are dim, placing food near the eel's hiding area. Juveniles usually need more frequent meals than adults, and uneaten food should be removed promptly.

Which fish can live with Zig Zag Eels?

Suitable tankmates include peaceful, robust fish that are too large to be swallowed, such as larger barbs, peaceful rainbowfish, medium to large gouramis, severums and other calm South or Southeast Asian community species. Avoid tiny tetras, small rasboras, fry and ornamental shrimp, which may be treated as prey. Highly aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species and bottom-dwellers that compete intensely for hiding places are also poor choices. Tankmates should be selected with the adult eel's eventual size in mind.

How could Zig Zag Eels be bred?

Zig Zag Eels are rarely bred in home aquariums. In nature, spawning is associated with seasonal changes and increased water levels, while courtship and egg laying require a very large, mature setup. A potential breeding project would involve a compatible adult pair, excellent conditioning with meaty foods, dense cover and carefully managed seasonal changes, but reliable captive-breeding methods are not well established for the species.

How can male and female Zig Zag Eels be distinguished?

Females generally become broader through the abdomen and may reach a greater overall size, while males are usually more slender. Outside of breeding condition, the sexes are difficult to distinguish reliably by appearance.
