Yellow Cobra Endler Guppies are colourful hybrid livebearers recognised for a vivid yellow-and-black cobra or snakeskin pattern. Males are small, active and often display yellow, orange, black and metallic markings across the body, with a striking patterned caudal fin. Because this is a hybrid strain, exact colour distribution and pattern quality can vary considerably between individuals and breeding lines.

These fish are energetic but generally peaceful, spending much of their time in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. Males frequently court females by displaying and darting around them, while females are larger and more subdued in colour. Their lively behaviour makes a small group an engaging feature in a planted community aquarium.

The Endler component of this hybrid comes from shallow, warm waters in northeastern Venezuela, including lagoons, pools and slow-moving streams. Guppies occupy a much broader range of habitats, from clear streams to weedy margins and mildly altered waterways. Both parent species are adapted to environments with vegetation, cover and abundant small invertebrate life.

Yellow Cobra Endler Guppies are not a naturally occurring wild species but a captive-bred ornamental variety. Selective breeding has combined Endler-like proportions and activity with guppy colour genetics, producing a range of yellow cobra patterns. Breeding groups may produce young with noticeably different colours, body shapes and markings, particularly when the strain is not from a carefully maintained line.

This is a selectively bred aquarium hybrid descended from Endler’s livebearer, Poecilia wingei, and the guppy, Poecilia reticulata. Its parent species originate in northern South America, especially Venezuela, with P. wingei associated with the Campoma and adjacent coastal drainages and P. reticulata widespread across Venezuela, Guyana, Trinidad and nearby regions.

A group should have at least a 40-litre aquarium, with a footprint of approximately 60 × 30 cm providing more useful swimming space than a tall tank. Use gentle to moderate filtration, an easily maintained planted layout and a secure lid, as these active fish can jump. Fine gravel or sand works well, with live plants, floating cover, wood and other smooth decor arranged to leave open swimming areas. Dense plants such as Java moss, guppy grass or hornwort are especially valuable for sheltering fry.

Males reach about 2.5 cm (1 inch), while females can grow to approximately 4 cm (1.6 inches). Hybrid strains vary, and some females may become slightly larger depending on their guppy ancestry.

Offer a varied omnivorous diet based on high-quality small flake or micro-pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. They also graze on soft algae and biofilm, so occasional spirulina-based foods and blanched vegetables can add useful variety. Feed small portions once or twice daily, taking the fish’s small mouths and tendency to overeat into account.

These peaceful livebearers suit community aquariums with similarly small, calm fish. Suitable companions include ember tetras, small rasboras, white cloud mountain minnows, peaceful corydoras, otocinclus and other non-aggressive livebearers. Avoid large, predatory or fin-nipping species such as angelfish, larger cichlids, tiger barbs and aggressive gouramis. They can be kept with other guppies and Endler hybrids, although mixed breeding will produce further hybrid offspring and may dilute a particular colour strain.

Yellow Cobra Endler Guppies are prolific livebearers and will breed readily in a mature aquarium. Keep several females per male to reduce persistent attention, and provide dense plants or a breeding mesh where fry can shelter. Females give birth to fully formed free-swimming young after roughly 24–30 days, although the interval varies with temperature and conditions. Adults may eat the fry, so separate the young or provide abundant fine-leaved cover and feed them small foods such as powdered flake, baby brine shrimp and suitable fry diets.

Males are smaller and far more colourful, usually showing the yellow cobra pattern, a gonopodium and a more slender body. Females are larger and fuller-bodied, with subdued grey, silver or yellowish colouring and a dark gravid spot that becomes more noticeable during pregnancy.
