Three Banded Sumo Loach Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Three Banded Sumo Loach is a small, striking hillstream loach with a compact body, broad head and underslung mouth suited to picking food from hard surfaces. Its pattern is defined by three prominent dark bands across a pale brown to golden body, although the intensity of the markings can vary with mood and surroundings. The fins are usually translucent, sometimes with subtle darker edging or markings.

Schistura ataranensis comes from the Ataran River drainage in southeastern Myanmar, part of the Salween basin in Southeast Asia. It inhabits flowing freshwater streams and river sections with rocky beds.

A group should have at least 60 litres, with a footprint of about 60 × 30 cm; a larger, longer aquarium is preferable for active groups or community setups. Use a mature, well-filtered aquarium with strong oxygenation and noticeable water movement, while still providing calmer pockets behind rocks. A fine sand or smooth-gravel substrate, rounded stones, caves, crevices and hardy plants will recreate its stream habitat and give each fish somewhere to retreat. Keep the water clean and stable, with a covered aquarium because these loaches can squeeze through small gaps.

They reach approximately 6 cm (2.4 in) in adult length. Females may become slightly deeper-bodied than males, but reliable sex-specific maximum sizes have not been firmly established.

Offer a varied diet of sinking micro-pellets, quality bottom-feeder tablets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and other small invertebrate foods. They naturally browse across stones for insect larvae, crustaceans and other tiny aquatic organisms, so food should reach the bottom rather than remain at the surface. Occasional soft vegetables or algae-based foods can add variety, though this species should not be treated as a dedicated algae eater.

These peaceful but active loaches are suitable with other small, robust stream-dwelling fish such as danios, white clouds, small barbs and peaceful rasboras. They can also be kept with other appropriately sized Schistura or similar loaches when the aquarium offers plenty of rockwork and hiding places. Avoid slow, long-finned fish, delicate species and boisterous tankmates that cannot tolerate strong water movement; closely related loaches may spar over territories in cramped quarters.

There are no well-established reports of Three Banded Sumo Loaches being regularly bred in home aquariums. Like related Schistura, they are believed to scatter eggs among fine gravel, stones or plants, with no parental care. A mature group in clean, highly oxygenated water may spawn after changes in flow and temperature, but successful rearing of the fry is uncommon and poorly documented.

Sexual differences are subtle and difficult to confirm outside breeding condition. Mature females may appear fuller through the abdomen, while males are often slightly slimmer; dependable external sexing information for this species is limited.
