What are Super Red Bristlenose Plecos like?

The Super Red Bristlenose Pleco is a striking captive-bred colour variety with a compact, flattened body covered in protective bony plates. Its rich orange-red to reddish-brown colouration can vary between individuals, and the fish has the characteristic broad sucker mouth associated with bristlenose plecos.

Like other Ancistrus, it spends much of its time attached to wood, rocks, glass or other solid surfaces, rasping at soft algae and biofilm with its specialised mouthparts. It is generally peaceful and most active from dusk onwards, although it may become territorial towards other plecos when competing for caves or feeding areas.

Mature males develop the elaborate fleshy bristles that give the group its common name. These tentacles are especially prominent around the snout and head, creating a distinctive appearance that makes the species popular in community aquariums.

In nature, bristlenose plecos inhabit flowing South American waters with submerged wood, stones, leaf litter and plenty of shaded retreats. Their armoured bodies and sucker mouths are well suited to clinging to surfaces in moving water, while their colour helps them blend into the dim, structurally complex river environment.

Where do Super Red Bristlenose Plecos originate?

The Super Red Bristlenose Pleco is a selectively bred colour form of Ancistrus, a genus native to freshwater rivers and streams across tropical South America. The exact wild locality of individual aquarium strains is often undocumented, as the trade name refers to colour rather than a distinct scientifically recognised species.

What water temperature suits Super Red Bristlenose Plecos?

Celsius: 2227 °C
Fahrenheit: 7280 °F

Which pH range keeps Super Red Bristlenose Plecos comfortable?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

How many Super Red Bristlenose Plecos can live together?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Super Red Bristlenose Plecos need?

A single Super Red Bristlenose Pleco should have an aquarium of at least 80 litres, with a footprint around 90 × 30 cm or larger; a bigger tank is preferable for groups or mixed communities. Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel, sturdy driftwood, rocks and several caves or tubes with appropriately sized entrances. Plants, shaded areas and moderate water movement help recreate its natural surroundings, while a secure lid and efficient filtration support good water quality.

How large do Super Red Bristlenose Plecos grow?

Adults usually reach about 12–15 cm (4.7–5.9 in) in total length. Males commonly grow slightly larger and have a more substantial head, although size varies between strains and individual fish.

What should Super Red Bristlenose Plecos eat?

Although they graze on algae and biofilm, Super Red Bristlenose Plecos need a varied diet rather than relying on aquarium algae alone. Offer sinking algae wafers or herbivore pellets, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach or green beans, along with occasional foods containing protein such as bloodworm or shrimp-based pellets. Driftwood should be available as part of the grazing environment, and uneaten fresh food should be removed before it deteriorates.

Which fish make good tankmates for Super Red Bristlenose Plecos?

Super Red Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful community fish and can be kept with peaceful tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, gouramis, smaller rainbowfish and many other calm community species. They also mix well with peaceful Corydoras and non-aggressive loaches. Avoid housing them with large predatory fish, persistent fin-nippers or highly aggressive cichlids. Several plecos may be kept together in a sufficiently spacious aquarium with separate caves, but mature males can quarrel over territory.

How can you breed Super Red Bristlenose Plecos?

Super Red Bristlenose Plecos are cave spawners. Provide a snug, single-entrance cave, after conditioning the adults with varied foods and regular water changes. The male selects and cleans the cave, while the female deposits a cluster of adhesive eggs. He guards and fans them until they hatch, usually in around 5–10 days, and the young absorb their yolk sacs over the following days. Once free-swimming, fry can be offered softened vegetables, algae-based foods and suitable fry foods.

How can you distinguish male and female Super Red Bristlenose Plecos?

Males develop conspicuous branched bristles across the snout and forehead, whereas females usually have few short bristles restricted to the edge of the snout or none that are clearly visible. Males also tend to have broader heads and a more robust build than females.
