Snow White Bristlenose Pleco Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Snow White Bristlenose Pleco is a pale colour morph of the popular bristlenose catfish, with a compact, armour-plated body and a broad, sucker-shaped mouth. Its creamy white to yellowish body is often paired with pink or red eyes in albino strains, although exact colouration varies between cultivated lines.

Like other bristlenose plecos, it has a flattened profile and a mouth adapted for clinging to solid surfaces. Mature males develop a striking arrangement of fleshy bristles on the snout and head, giving the species its familiar common name.

These catfish are generally peaceful and spend much of their time resting on wood, rocks, glass or the aquarium floor. They are most active during the evening and at night, when they explore surfaces in search of food.

In nature, Ancistrus cirrhosus inhabits rivers, streams and flooded forest environments in South America. Its body armour and strong sucker mouth help it remain secure in flowing water, while its subdued activity and excellent camouflage reduce attention from predators.

Ancistrus cirrhosus is native to freshwater habitats in southern South America, particularly parts of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay. Snow White Bristlenose Plecos in the aquarium trade are selectively bred colour morphs of this species rather than a separate wild species.

A single Snow White Bristlenose Pleco should have an aquarium of at least 80 litres, with a footprint around 90 by 30 cm or larger; a bigger aquarium is needed for multiple adults. Use efficient filtration and good water movement while leaving calm areas for rest. Provide driftwood, smooth rocks, caves and sturdy plants, with open surfaces for grazing. A fine sand or smooth-gravel substrate is preferable because it protects the fish's underside and barbels. Secure a tight-fitting lid, as plecos can occasionally force their way through gaps.

Adults typically reach around 12–15 cm (4.7–5.9 in) in total length. Females may become slightly bulkier, while males often appear longer and more heavily built around the head, although the overall size difference is modest.

Their diet should be based on algae wafers, sinking herbivore pellets and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, spinach and green beans. Driftwood is also valuable because the fish rasp its surface and ingest small amounts of wood fibre. Supplement their mainly herbivorous diet occasionally with sinking foods containing some protein, such as insect-based pellets or frozen foods, especially for juveniles and breeding adults. Remove uneaten vegetables before they decompose.

Snow White Bristlenose Plecos are peaceful community fish and can be kept with small to medium-sized tetras, rasboras, danios, peaceful barbs, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, gouramis and other non-aggressive community species. They are also compatible with most peaceful bottom dwellers when enough hiding places and feeding areas are available. Avoid large predatory fish, aggressive cichlids, persistent fin-nippers and very boisterous species that may harass them or outcompete them for food. Males may become territorial towards one another, particularly when caves are limited.

Snow White Bristlenose Plecos readily breed in suitable aquarium conditions. Provide a secluded cave or narrow spawning tube that the male can defend, along with clean, well-oxygenated water and a varied vegetable-rich diet. The female deposits a cluster of eggs inside the cave, after which the male guards and fans them until they hatch. The fry can be raised on softened vegetables, algae-based foods and other suitable foods for young plecos.

Mature males develop prominent branched bristles across the snout and head, whereas females usually have shorter, finer bristles limited to the edge of the snout or none that are readily visible. Females are often rounder through the abdomen, while males tend to have a broader, more bristled head.
