What makes Silver Loaches such fascinating fish?

The Silver Loach is a slender, eel-shaped member of the Pangio group, with a long cylindrical body and a subtly pointed head. Its colouring is typically silvery beige to pale brown, often with a darker back and a soft, understated sheen rather than the strong banding seen in the better-known Kuhli Loach. Small barbels around the mouth help it investigate the bottom.

Where do Silver Loaches occur naturally?

Silver Loaches, Pangio anguillaris, are native to tropical Southeast Asia, including parts of Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. They inhabit slow-moving forest streams, swampy waterways and blackwater environments across the Malay Archipelago and neighbouring mainland areas.

What water temperature suits Silver Loaches best?

Celsius: 2228 °C
Fahrenheit: 7282 °F

Which pH range keeps Silver Loaches comfortable?

Ideal pH: 67.5

How large should a group of Silver Loaches be?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Silver Loach aquarium be arranged?

A group should have at least a 75-litre aquarium, with a footprint of approximately 90 by 30 cm; a longer tank is preferable to a tall one. Use a deep layer of smooth, soft sand or very fine rounded gravel so the loaches can burrow without damaging their delicate bodies and barbels. Provide shaded areas with driftwood, leaf litter, caves, dense plants and floating cover, while maintaining gentle water movement, secure cover and excellent water quality. A temperature of 24–29°C and a slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 5.5–7.0 suit their natural blackwater and slow-stream origins.

How large can Silver Loaches become?

Up to around 12 cm (4.7 inches). Females are generally a little longer and noticeably fuller-bodied than males, while males tend to remain slimmer.

What should Silver Loaches eat?

These bottom-feeding loaches are opportunistic omnivores with a strong preference for meaty foods. Offer sinking micro-pellets or wafers alongside frozen or live bloodworms, blackworms, daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped soft foods. Feed after the aquarium lights dim so food reaches the substrate, and ensure that more assertive tankmates do not consume everything first.

Which fish can live alongside Silver Loaches?

Silver Loaches are peaceful and best kept with other gentle fish that occupy the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. Suitable companions include small rasboras, peaceful tetras, pencilfish, honey or sparkling gouramis, small livebearers that tolerate soft water, and other calm Pangio loaches. Avoid large cichlids, aggressive or boisterous species, fin-nippers and any fish large enough to swallow them. They should be kept in a group of at least six, as solitary individuals are more secretive and stressed.

Could you breed Silver Loaches in a home aquarium?

Silver Loaches are rarely bred in home aquariums, and reliable captive-breeding methods are not well established. A mature group may spawn naturally in heavily planted, soft, slightly acidic water, with eggs scattered among fine-leaved plants, moss or floating vegetation. The adults and other fish may eat the eggs, so separating spawning material or raising fry in a dedicated aquarium is advisable. Tiny newly hatched fry require appropriately sized live foods such as infusoria before progressing to baby brine shrimp and other small foods.

How can male and female Silver Loaches be distinguished?

Mature females usually have a deeper, heavier abdomen, particularly when carrying eggs. Males are typically slimmer and may develop somewhat more robust pectoral fins, but the difference is subtle outside breeding condition.
