What are Red Hump Eartheaters like?

The Red Hump Eartheater is a robust South American cichlid with an elongated, laterally compressed body and a distinctive sloping forehead. Mature males develop a pronounced fleshy hump behind the head, while their bodies can show blue-green iridescence, reddish markings and extended fins. Females are generally smaller and less dramatically coloured.

This species gets its common name from its habit of taking mouthfuls of substrate and filtering out edible material. Sand passes through the gill openings as the fish searches for small invertebrates, organic particles and other food. The constant sifting gives the fish an engaging, busy presence on the lower levels of an aquarium.

In the wild, Red Hump Eartheaters live in river habitats where seasonal changes affect water flow, sediment and food availability. They are usually found near the bottom, moving over open areas and around submerged roots, branches and other cover.

They are generally more peaceful than many similarly sized cichlids, although mature males may establish territories and quarrel with one another. Their social behaviour is best understood as a loose group hierarchy rather than tight schooling, with females and subordinate males moving through the aquarium while dominant individuals defend preferred areas.

Geophagus steindachneri is one of the better-known eartheaters in the aquarium hobby and is especially valued for its unusual feeding behaviour and maternal mouthbrooding. With age, established adults can become impressive, intelligent centrepiece fish without losing the characteristic gentle, investigative nature of the group.

Where do Red Hump Eartheaters come from?

Red Hump Eartheaters are native to northern South America, especially the Magdalena, Cauca and Sinú river systems of Colombia. They inhabit warm, slow- to moderately flowing freshwater environments with sandy or muddy bottoms.

What water temperature suits Red Hump Eartheaters?

Celsius: 2228 °C
Fahrenheit: 7282 °F

Which pH range is best for Red Hump Eartheaters?

Ideal pH: 67.5

How many Red Hump Eartheaters belong in a group?

Keep at least 4 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Red Hump Eartheater aquarium be set up?

A group of Red Hump Eartheaters should have at least 250 litres, with a footprint of approximately 120 cm by 45 cm; a larger aquarium is preferable for adult males or a mixed community. Use a deep layer of smooth, fine-grained sand so they can sift without damaging their mouths or gills. Arrange rounded rocks, driftwood and sturdy plants around the edges to create territories and cover while leaving broad open areas for foraging. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and stable, clean water are important, but avoid excessive current across the entire bottom.

How large do Red Hump Eartheaters become?

Males can reach about 20 cm (8 in) in total length, while females are usually smaller at around 15 cm (6 in). Aquarium specimens are often somewhat smaller than the maximum recorded adult size.

What should Red Hump Eartheaters eat?

Offer a varied diet of high-quality sinking cichlid pellets, granules and wafers, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, daphnia and chopped earthworm. Their natural sifting behaviour should be supported with food that reaches the substrate. Feed modest portions several times a day rather than relying on them to find nourishment in the sand.

Which fish make good companions for Red Hump Eartheaters?

Red Hump Eartheaters can be kept with peaceful, similarly sized South American fish such as larger tetras, peaceful barbs, larger Corydoras, peaceful Loricariids, severums and other non-aggressive Geophagus species when the aquarium is sufficiently spacious. Avoid fin-nipping fish, highly aggressive cichlids and very small species that may be intimidated or viewed as prey. They should not be housed with boisterous territorial fish that constantly compete for the lower levels.

How can Red Hump Eartheaters be bred successfully?

Red Hump Eartheaters are maternal mouthbrooders. After courtship, the female lays adhesive eggs on a clean surface, where they are fertilised by the male. She then gathers the eggs into her mouth and incubates them for around two to three weeks, releasing the fry periodically and taking them back in when danger threatens. Provide fine sand, quiet surroundings and plenty of hiding places, and feed the fry newly hatched brine shrimp or other appropriately small foods.

How can male and female Red Hump Eartheaters be distinguished?

Males are noticeably larger and develop the characteristic red or reddish nuchal hump, along with longer dorsal and anal fins and stronger colouration. Females remain smaller, have a less prominent head profile and are generally more subtly marked.
