Pulcher Mystus Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

Pulcher Mystus is a small, elegant bagrid catfish with a slender body, long barbels and a subtly patterned appearance. Its colouring is generally silvery to pale brown, with darker markings that help break up its outline among shaded river-bottom habitats.

This is primarily a nocturnal fish. It often rests among cover during the day before becoming more active at dusk and after dark, when it explores the aquarium with its sensitive barbels and searches the substrate for food.

In suitable company, Pulcher Mystus is usually peaceful and sociable. It is not a territorial catfish, although its instinct to swallow small prey means that very tiny fish, newly hatched fry and dwarf shrimp may be at risk.

In the wild, it inhabits flowing or gently moving freshwater with submerged roots, stones and other hiding places. Like many small Mystus catfish, it combines an attractive appearance with secretive behaviour, making it especially interesting in a dimly lit community aquarium.

Pulcher Mystus is native to freshwater systems in Myanmar, in mainland Southeast Asia. It is associated with river environments of the Irrawaddy basin and surrounding drainage areas.

A group of Pulcher Mystus should have at least 120 litres, with a footprint of approximately 90 × 40 cm or larger; floor space is more important than excessive height. Use a soft sand or fine rounded-gravel substrate, smooth stones, driftwood, caves and dense planting to provide shaded retreats. Moderate water movement, efficient filtration and subdued lighting suit its riverine habits, while a tightly covered aquarium is advisable because active Mystus catfish can jump.

Up to about 12 cm (4.7 inches) in total length. Females are usually slightly deeper-bodied and may be marginally larger than males.

This omnivorous catfish accepts sinking pellets, catfish tablets and other quality foods that reach the bottom. Offer a varied diet including frozen or live bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and chopped earthworm, with occasional soft vegetable matter. Feed after the aquarium lights dim so that this nocturnal species can feed without competition from faster midwater fish.

Pulcher Mystus can be kept with similarly sized, peaceful fish such as larger rasboras, peaceful barbs, danios, small-to-medium gouramis and other non-aggressive Asian community species. It is best maintained in a group and should not be housed with fin-nipping fish, highly aggressive cichlids or large predatory species. Very small fish, shrimp and fry may be eaten, particularly at night.

Pulcher Mystus is not commonly bred in home aquariums, and a dependable captive-breeding method is not well established. Mature groups may spawn after conditioning with a varied diet and changes to clean, slightly softer water, but the eggs and fry require protection from the adults. Commercial breeding of related Mystus catfish often relies on controlled or hormone-assisted spawning, so successful aquarium breeding should be regarded as uncommon rather than routine.

Females typically have a fuller, rounder abdomen, especially when mature or carrying eggs. Males are generally slimmer and may show a more pronounced genital papilla, although sexing young Pulcher Mystus visually can be difficult.
