What makes Plakat Bettas distinctive?

The Plakat Betta is a short-finned form of Betta splendens, prized for its compact, athletic profile and vivid colours. Unlike long-finned varieties, its fins are relatively short and practical-looking, giving the fish a streamlined appearance that highlights its body colour, iridescent scales and expressive finnage.

Males are especially known for their confident display behaviour. They flare their gill covers, spread their fins and intensify their colours when confronting a rival or sometimes when seeing their reflection. Despite this dramatic presentation, individual personalities vary from bold and inquisitive to shy and reserved.

In the wild, Betta splendens inhabits quiet, shallow waters such as rice paddies, marshes, floodplain pools and slow-moving channels. These habitats may become warm, stagnant and oxygen-poor, and the species can breathe atmospheric air using its labyrinth organ as well as extracting oxygen from the water.

Plakat Bettas are selectively bred in many colour patterns, including red, blue, turquoise, black, white, copper, marble and multicoloured forms. Their short fins are less vulnerable to damage than the flowing fins of many show varieties, although they remain territorial fish with strong individual temperaments.

Where did Plakat Bettas originate?

Betta splendens originates from mainland Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The Plakat is a domesticated short-finned form developed from these wild bettas rather than a separate wild species.

What water temperature suits Plakat Bettas best?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7682 °F

Which pH range keeps Plakat Bettas comfortable?

Ideal pH: 68

Should Plakat Bettas live alone or in a group?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Plakat Bettas need?

A single Plakat Betta should have at least 20 litres, with a footprint around 45 × 30 cm or larger; a bigger aquarium is preferable for community stocking. Use a secure lid because Bettas can jump, gentle filtration and calm water flow. Include broad-leaved plants, floating plants, smooth shelter and open swimming space, while avoiding sharp ornaments that may tear the fins. A dark, fine-grained or smooth substrate works well, and the aquarium should provide easy access to the surface for atmospheric breathing.

How large do Plakat Bettas become?

Males commonly reach up to 7 cm (2.8 in) in total length, while females are usually smaller at around 5–6 cm (2.0–2.4 in). Size varies between strains and individual fish.

What should Plakat Bettas eat?

Plakat Bettas are carnivorous micro-predators. Offer a high-quality Betta or carnivorous micro-pellet as the staple, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Small, appropriately sized portions are best, and variety helps support colour, growth and condition. Avoid relying on plant-based flakes or feeding more than the fish can consume promptly.

Which fish can share a tank with Plakat Bettas?

A Plakat Betta may live with peaceful, non-territorial tankmates such as harlequin rasboras, ember tetras, small peaceful rasboras, kuhli loaches, small Corydoras and suitable snails or shrimp, provided the aquarium is spacious and well structured. Avoid housing males together, and do not keep males with females except briefly for controlled breeding. Fin-nipping species, highly active fish, aggressive tankmates and other gouramis or territorial labyrinth fish are poor choices. Some individual Bettas will attack shrimp or smaller fish, so compatibility should always be monitored.

How can Plakat Bettas be bred successfully?

Plakat Bettas are bubble-nest breeders. Condition the male and female with a varied, protein-rich diet, then place them together in a shallow breeding setup with floating cover. The male builds a bubble nest and embraces the female to fertilise the eggs, which he collects and guards in the nest. Remove the female after spawning, and separate the male once the fry are free-swimming so he does not eat them. The tiny fry require infusoria-sized foods initially, followed by larger foods as they grow.

How can male and female Plakat Bettas be distinguished?

Males are generally more vividly coloured, have broader bodies and display larger, more strongly developed fins, even though Plakats are short-finned. Females are usually smaller and may show a visible egg spot between the pelvic and anal fins; their colours and finnage are often less intense, although selectively bred females can also be highly colourful.
