What are Pearl Cichlids like?

The Pearl Cichlid, Geophagus brasiliensis, is a robust South American cichlid named for the pearly blue-green flecks that shimmer across its body. Depending on mood, age, and locality, its base colour can range from silvery beige and olive to bronze, with darker markings through the eye and along the flanks. Mature fish often develop richer blue, red, and orange tones around the fins and face.

Despite the common name “eartheater,” this species is not a close relative of the true Geophagus species. It still has the characteristic habit of taking mouthfuls of sand or fine substrate, filtering out edible particles, and expelling the unwanted material through the gills. This constant searching gives the fish an engaging, purposeful presence in the aquarium.

Pearl Cichlids are intelligent, active, and strongly individualistic. They may be relatively calm when young, but adults become territorial, particularly when paired or breeding. Their behaviour ranges from confident exploration to dramatic displays in which the fins are spread and the body colour intensifies.

In nature, they are found in a variety of Brazilian freshwater habitats, including clear streams, sluggish rivers, floodplain areas, and coastal waterways. Their broad environmental tolerance has helped them become one of the more adaptable large cichlids available to experienced fishkeepers.

Where do Pearl Cichlids originate?

Pearl Cichlids are native to southeastern South America, especially coastal and inland river systems of southeastern and southern Brazil, with populations extending into parts of Uruguay. They inhabit warm, often slow-moving rivers, streams, lagoons, and other freshwater environments.

What water temperature suits Pearl Cichlids?

Celsius: 2228 °C
Fahrenheit: 7282 °F

Which pH range is best for Pearl Cichlids?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

How many Pearl Cichlids should live together?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

How should a Pearl Cichlid aquarium be set up?

A single adult or a compatible pair should have at least 200 litres, with a footprint of roughly 120 × 45 cm; larger groups need a considerably bigger aquarium. Use fine, smooth sand so the fish can sift it safely, along with rounded stones, sturdy wood, caves, and robust plants secured against digging. Leave open areas for foraging and arrange decor to create separate territories and broken lines of sight. Strong filtration, good oxygenation, and stable, clean water are important because these active fish produce a substantial amount of waste.

How large can Pearl Cichlids become?

Males can reach about 28 cm (11 in) in length, while females are usually smaller at around 20–22 cm (8–8.7 in). Aquarium specimens are often somewhat smaller than the maximum recorded size.

What foods should Pearl Cichlids eat?

Pearl Cichlids are omnivores that naturally sift substrate for small invertebrates, crustaceans, plant matter, and other organic particles. Feed a varied diet built around quality sinking cichlid pellets or granules, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworm, mysis shrimp, and chopped earthworms. Spirulina-based foods and blanched vegetables can provide useful plant matter. Feed modest portions once or twice daily and remove uneaten food promptly.

Which fish can share a tank with Pearl Cichlids?

Pearl Cichlids are best kept with sturdy, similarly sized South American cichlids and robust community fish that can tolerate their territorial behaviour. Suitable possibilities include larger tetras, medium-to-large barbs, peaceful severums, acaras, some plecos, and other robust catfish, provided the aquarium is spacious and carefully planned. Avoid tiny tetras, delicate fish, long-finned species, and timid bottom dwellers that may be harassed or outcompeted. They can be aggressive toward their own kind, especially during breeding, so pairs and groups require substantial space and visual barriers.

How can you encourage Pearl Cichlids to breed?

Pearl Cichlids are substrate spawners that commonly breed as a bonded pair. The female lays several hundred eggs on a smooth rock, slate, or other firm surface, and both parents guard the clutch and later protect the free-swimming fry. Offer suitable spawning surfaces, clean well-oxygenated water, and small foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp for the young. Parents may move the wrigglers into shallow pits and defend them vigorously.

How can you distinguish male and female Pearl Cichlids?

Mature males are generally larger, deeper-bodied, and more heavily built than females, often developing longer extensions on the dorsal and anal fins and stronger colouration on the head and flanks. Females are typically smaller and rounder, particularly when carrying eggs, and usually have shorter fin extensions.
