What are Panda loaches like?

The Panda loach, Yaoshania pachychilus, is a small, strikingly patterned stream loach named for its bold black-and-white markings. Dark bands and patches contrast with a pale body, while the flattened shape and enlarged fins help it remain stable on smooth stones in flowing water.

This species is a peaceful bottom-dweller that spends much of its time clinging to rocks and grazing across hard surfaces. It is active without being aggressive, and a group will often forage together, investigate the surroundings and rest in sheltered gaps between stones.

In the wild, Panda loaches inhabit cool, clear streams running through limestone landscapes. These waters are typically highly oxygenated, with a strong current, rocky beds and a thin coating of algae and microorganisms rather than deep deposits of soft mud.

The species was formerly placed in the genus Protomyzon and is still sometimes sold under older names. Its specialised body and preference for fast-flowing water make it a fascinating representative of the hillstream-loach group, but it is best suited to aquarists who can recreate a mature stream environment.

Where do Panda loaches originate?

Panda loaches are native to clear, fast-flowing karst streams in Guangxi Province, southern China. Their known range is associated with the Hejiang River drainage, in the Asian part of China.

What water temperature suits Panda loaches?

Celsius: 2025 °C
Fahrenheit: 6877 °F

Which pH range keeps Panda loaches comfortable?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

How large should a group of Panda loaches be?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Panda loach aquarium be set up?

A group should have at least a 60-litre aquarium, with a footprint of approximately 60 x 30 cm or larger; a longer tank is preferable because it provides more swimming space and current gradients. Use smooth rounded gravel or fine sand, substantial smooth stones and pieces of driftwood, with caves and narrow retreats between the decor. Strong filtration, vigorous surface movement and excellent oxygenation are important, while hardy aquatic plants can be added where their roots will tolerate the flow. The aquarium should be mature and stable, with ample algae-covered surfaces and no sharp edges that could damage the fish.

How large do Panda loaches become?

Up to about 5 cm (2 inches) in total length. Females are usually slightly larger and fuller-bodied than males.

What should Panda loaches eat?

Their natural diet consists largely of aufwuchs, soft algae, diatoms and the tiny organisms living on rocks. In the aquarium, offer algae-based sinking wafers, spirulina foods and quality bottom-feeding pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables and occasional frozen foods such as bloodworm or daphnia. A mature aquarium with established surfaces is especially valuable, as these loaches graze throughout the day and should not depend solely on occasional meals.

Which fish can live with Panda loaches?

Panda loaches are peaceful and work well with other calm, cool-water species that appreciate clean, oxygen-rich water. Suitable companions can include white cloud mountain minnows, small danionins, peaceful stream loaches and other non-territorial hillstream loaches, provided the aquarium is spacious enough. Avoid large, boisterous or predatory fish, fin-nippers and warm-water community species that require substantially higher temperatures. They should also not be housed with aggressive bottom-dwellers that compete for shelter or food.

What is the best way to breed Panda loaches?

Panda loaches have been bred in aquaria, although consistent results are uncommon. They are believed to spawn in crevices or among fine gravel, with eggs receiving clean, well-oxygenated water. Provide mature biofilm, strong current and plenty of sheltered spawning sites, then remove the adults or protect the eggs from being eaten. Very small fry require tiny foods such as infusoria and naturally occurring microorganisms before moving on to powdered or finely crushed foods.

How can male and female Panda loaches be distinguished?

Sexing Panda loaches is difficult outside of breeding condition. Mature females tend to be broader through the abdomen and slightly larger overall, while males are generally slimmer; colour pattern is not a dependable way to distinguish the sexes.
