What makes the Ninja Woodcat an interesting aquarium fish?

The Ninja Woodcat is a tiny, beautifully patterned driftwood catfish with a dark body marked by pale, irregular lines and patches that create a mosaic-like appearance. Its cryptic colours help it disappear among roots, branches and shadows, giving the species its memorable common name.

This is a shy, peaceful catfish that becomes most active after dusk. During daylight it often rests motionless in a crevice or beneath a piece of wood, while at night it emerges to search the aquarium floor and surrounding décor for food.

In the wild, Tatia musaica lives among submerged branches, leaf litter and other tangled cover in warm forest streams and quiet river margins. The dark, tea-coloured appearance of many of these waters is created by decomposing leaves and wood releasing tannins.

Although it is related to the larger woodcats of the family Auchenipteridae, the Ninja Woodcat remains notably small and delicate. Its unusual pattern, nocturnal habits and preference for hiding places make it especially appealing to aquarists who enjoy observing less conventional catfish behaviour.

Where does the Ninja Woodcat originate?

Tatia musaica comes from the upper Orinoco drainage in northern South America, particularly the Atabapo region of Venezuela and adjoining areas of Colombia. It inhabits warm, shaded, slow-moving forest waters rich in submerged wood and leaf litter.

What water temperature suits Ninja Woodcats?

Celsius: 2226 °C
Fahrenheit: 7279 °F

Which pH range is best for Tatia musaica?

Ideal pH: 6.07.5

How many Ninja Woodcats should live together?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

What aquarium setup does a Ninja Woodcat need?

A group should be kept in an established aquarium of at least 60 litres, with a footprint around 60 by 30 cm or larger; a longer tank is preferable to a tall one. Use soft sand or smooth fine gravel, plenty of driftwood, small caves and dense shaded retreats, with leaf litter and subdued lighting helping to recreate its blackwater habitat. Gentle filtration, good oxygenation and stable, clean water are important, while open areas should remain available for nocturnal foraging.

How large will a Ninja Woodcat become?

Up to about 5 cm (2 in) in total length. Females are generally a little deeper-bodied and may be slightly larger than males.

What foods should Ninja Woodcats be offered?

This nocturnal omnivore should receive a varied diet of sinking foods, including quality catfish pellets, soft sinking granules, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, mysis and other suitably sized aquatic foods. Offer food shortly before or after the aquarium lights go out so the fish can feed without competition. Occasional small live foods are useful for conditioning adults and encouraging natural hunting behaviour.

Which fish make good companions for Ninja Woodcats?

Ninja Woodcats are peaceful and suit aquariums containing other small, gentle South American fish such as pencilfish, small tetras, peaceful rasboras, otocinclus and dwarf corydoras. They can also be kept with similarly calm small catfish and other unobtrusive blackwater species. Avoid large or boisterous fish, fin-nippers and aggressive bottom dwellers, which may outcompete, injure or intimidate them. Shrimplets and very small fry may be eaten, particularly at night.

How can Ninja Woodcats be encouraged to breed?

Ninja Woodcats are cave-spawning fish and are most likely to breed in a mature, peaceful aquarium containing several compatible adults. Provide small caves, tubes or tight pieces of driftwood, together with soft, slightly acidic water and excellent water quality. The fish usually spawn in seclusion, and the eggs are cared for inside or close to the chosen cavity. Fry can be raised on tiny live foods such as newly hatched brine shrimp once they are free-swimming, although captive breeding is not commonly achieved on demand.

How can male and female Ninja Woodcats be distinguished?

Females tend to have a fuller, rounder abdomen, particularly when carrying eggs. Mature males have a modified anal fin associated with reproduction, while females usually retain a shorter, more conventionally shaped anal fin.
