Neon Rainbowfish Care Guide - Aquarium Tips, Diet & Breeding

Neon Rainbowfish, also known as Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, are small, lively members of the Melanotaeniidae family. Their bodies have a striking blue-green or turquoise sheen, while the fins may show yellow, orange or reddish tones. Under suitable lighting, their reflective scales can give the entire fish a vivid metallic glow.

Neon Rainbowfish are native to the Mamberamo River basin in northern Papua, Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. They inhabit freshwater streams and tributaries in a tropical region of Oceania.

A group of Neon Rainbowfish should be given an aquarium of at least 75 litres, with a footprint of about 90 cm by 30 cm or larger to provide room for their constant swimming. Use open areas for movement alongside hardy plants, wood and smooth stones around the edges, with a dark sand or fine-gravel substrate helping their colours stand out. Good water movement, stable filtration and a secure lid are valuable, as these active fish can jump when startled. A planted layout with subdued background cover allows them to display naturally while retaining generous open swimming space.

Males reach a maximum of about 6 cm (2.4 inches), while females are usually smaller at around 5 cm (2 inches).

Neon Rainbowfish are omnivores and should receive a varied diet of quality flakes or small granules alongside frozen or live foods such as mosquito larvae, daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm. Small vegetable-based foods can also contribute useful variety. Feed modest portions that the group can finish quickly, using appropriately small foods for juveniles and newly hatched fry.

Neon Rainbowfish are peaceful community fish and work well with similarly sized, active species such as peaceful tetras, rasboras, smaller barbs, danios, Corydoras, peaceful dwarf cichlids and other rainbowfish. They should not be housed with large, predatory or highly aggressive fish, nor with fin-nipping species that may harass their flowing fins. Keeping them in a proper group helps them remain confident and reduces the likelihood of bullying within the aquarium.

Neon Rainbowfish are egg scatterers that can be bred in a mature, peaceful aquarium. Condition a group with plenty of high-quality foods, then provide fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop for the females to scatter their adhesive eggs among. Spawning may occur over several days, with males displaying intensely beside the females. Remove the eggs or spawning material to a separate container, as adults may eat them. The eggs generally hatch after around 7 to 10 days, and the tiny fry should initially receive infusoria-sized foods before progressing to newly hatched brine shrimp and other suitably small foods.

Males are generally larger and deeper-bodied, with stronger blue coloration and more intense yellow, orange or reddish fin markings. Females are typically slimmer and less vividly coloured, and may show a darker line along the middle of the body.
