Midnight Hueseri Peacock Care Guide - Habitat, Diet & Breeding
What are Midnight Hueseri Peacocks like?
The Midnight Hueseri Peacock is a selectively marketed colour form of Aulonocara hueseri, a Lake Malawi peacock cichlid. Mature males are known for deep blue, indigo and violet tones, often contrasted by darker midnight shading and subtle metallic highlights. Females are less colourful, generally showing brownish-grey or silvery tones with subdued vertical bars.
Like other peacock cichlids, this species has an elongated body, large eyes and specialised sensory pores around the lower jaw. These pores help it detect small invertebrates hidden in sandy lake sediments. Males become especially striking when displaying to females or defending a small breeding area.
In the wild, Aulonocara hueseri searches across the boundary between sand and rock for insect larvae and other tiny invertebrates. It is generally less boisterous than many Malawi mbuna, although males can become territorial around spawning sites and may harass rival males or receptive females.
The species belongs to the diverse Aulonocara group, commonly called peacock cichlids. Its vivid male coloration and comparatively measured behaviour have made it a popular choice for aquarists who want a display of Malawi cichlid colour without keeping one of the most aggressive mbuna species.
Where do Midnight Hueseri Peacocks originate?
Aulonocara hueseri is endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa, with its natural range associated particularly with the Likoma Island area and nearby rocky shores. It inhabits clear, alkaline freshwater habitats along the lake's eastern side of the African Rift Valley.

How many Midnight Hueseri Peacocks should live together?
Keep at least 4 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.
What aquarium setup do Midnight Hueseri Peacocks need?
A group of Midnight Hueseri Peacocks should have an aquarium of at least 250 litres, with a footprint of approximately 120 cm by 45 cm; a larger tank is preferable for a male with several females or a mixed Malawi community. Use fine sand or another smooth substrate so the fish can sift naturally, together with limestone or other aquarium-safe rockwork arranged into caves, visual barriers and territorial boundaries. Leave open swimming and foraging areas, provide efficient filtration and strong oxygenation, and maintain stable hard, alkaline water around 24–27°C, pH 7.8–8.6.
How large do Midnight Hueseri Peacocks become?
Males reach approximately 15 cm (6 in) in length, while females are usually smaller at around 10–12 cm (4–4.7 in).
What should Midnight Hueseri Peacocks eat?
This species is primarily an insectivore and should receive a varied diet based on quality sinking cichlid pellets or granules formulated for peacock cichlids. Supplement these with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, daphnia and mosquito larvae. Feed small portions once or twice daily rather than offering one large meal, and avoid fatty mammalian meats, which are unsuitable for Malawi cichlids.
Which tankmates work well with Midnight Hueseri Peacocks?
Suitable companions include other similarly sized, peaceful-to-moderate Lake Malawi peacocks and compatible open-water haplochromine cichlids, provided the aquarium is spacious and has adequate cover. Avoid mixing them with highly aggressive mbuna, very boisterous predators or fish small enough to be bullied or swallowed. Keeping multiple Aulonocara species together can also lead to hybridisation, so species should be selected carefully and different males should not be housed together unless the aquarium is large enough to reduce territorial conflict.
How can Midnight Hueseri Peacocks be bred successfully?
Midnight Hueseri Peacocks are maternal mouthbrooders. For the best chance of success, keep one male with several females and provide open sand alongside rockwork for courtship. The male displays around a chosen spawning site, where the female lays eggs and immediately picks them up in her mouth; she then fertilises them by taking sperm from the male's egg spots. The female carries the brood for around three weeks, usually eating little during this time. She may release free-swimming fry among cover, where they can be fed finely crushed flakes, small cichlid granules or newly hatched brine shrimp.
How can male and female Midnight Hueseri Peacocks be told apart?
Males are substantially more colourful, developing intense blue, violet or indigo body tones and more prominent fin markings as they mature. Females remain comparatively drab, with silver-brown or grey coloration and darker vertical barring; males may also grow slightly larger and develop longer, more pointed fins.
