Metal White Tiger Guppy Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Metal White Tiger Guppy is a selectively bred colour and pattern form of Poecilia reticulata. It is recognised for a bright metallic white body combined with tiger-like markings, often most clearly displayed across the tail and rear half of the body. Pattern intensity and the exact balance of white, silver and darker markings can vary between individuals and breeding lines.

Males are small, colourful and constantly active, using their flowing tails and patterned bodies in courtship displays. Females are larger and more robust, with a plainer appearance that reflects their role in producing broods of young. Fancy guppies are popular because even a small group can provide considerable movement and colour in a community aquarium.

Wild guppies come from a broad range of tropical habitats, including shallow streams, drainage channels, pools and slow-moving waterways. Their natural environments may contain vegetation, submerged roots and leaf litter, and populations can adapt to noticeably different water conditions across their native range.

The Metal White Tiger pattern is maintained through selective breeding, so offspring may show a mixture of related colours and markings rather than developing as perfectly identical copies of their parents. This makes the strain especially interesting to hobbyists who enjoy observing and refining guppy lines.

The guppy, Poecilia reticulata, is native to northern South America, including Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and parts of Brazil, as well as nearby Caribbean islands such as Trinidad. The Metal White Tiger form is a selectively bred aquarium strain rather than a naturally occurring wild variety.

A group of Metal White Tiger Guppies should have an aquarium of at least 40 litres, with a larger tank preferable for a mixed-sex colony or community. A practical minimum footprint is about 60 × 30 cm, with enough swimming space along the front and middle of the aquarium. Use gentle filtration, open swimming areas and dense live plants or fine-leaved cover around the sides and rear. Smooth gravel or sand is suitable, and floating plants can provide shelter for fry while leaving some clear water for active swimming. A secure lid is useful because guppies can jump.

Males typically reach about 3 cm (1.2 in), while females can grow to around 5 cm (2 in). Exceptional females may be slightly larger, particularly when mature or carrying fry.

Metal White Tiger Guppies are omnivores that benefit from a varied diet. Offer a quality tropical flake or small pellet as the staple, supplemented with foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm in moderation and finely chopped or powdered vegetable-rich foods. Small portions fed once or twice daily are appropriate for adults, while fry need suitably tiny foods and more frequent meals. Variety supports growth, colour and reproductive condition.

Metal White Tiger Guppies are peaceful community fish and can be kept with similarly calm species such as small tetras, rasboras, peaceful corydoras, kuhli loaches, small livebearers and gentle dwarf gouramis. Avoid large, predatory or fin-nipping fish, including many aggressive barbs and larger cichlids, which may eat guppies or damage their flowing fins. Males may pursue females frequently, so mixed groups should contain several females for each male. They can also be kept with other guppy strains, although mixed breeding will not preserve the Metal White Tiger line.

Metal White Tiger Guppies are livebearers and usually breed readily in a mature aquarium. Keep a ratio of around one male to two or three females to reduce persistent attention on individual females. After internal fertilisation, a female gives birth to free-swimming fry after roughly three to four weeks, although timing varies with temperature and conditions. Dense plants, floating cover or a separate breeding area give the young places to hide, as adults may eat them. Fry can be raised on powdered flakes, specialised fry food and newly hatched brine shrimp.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males are smaller and more vividly patterned, with a modified anal fin called a gonopodium and usually a larger, more ornamental tail. Females are deeper-bodied and larger, with a fan-shaped anal fin, subtler colouration and a dark gravid spot that becomes more noticeable during pregnancy.
