What are Mangrove Sleeper Gobies like?

The Mangrove Sleeper Goby is a stocky, ambush-hunting eleotrid with a broad head, large mouth and mottled brown, grey and olive colouring. Its irregular markings help it disappear among mangrove roots, fallen branches and muddy or sandy bottoms. Individual fish can vary considerably in shade depending on their surroundings and mood.

This species is a patient predator rather than an active open-water swimmer. It often rests motionless on the substrate, using its cryptic patterning to approach or surprise smaller fish and crustaceans. Like other sleeper gobies, it is not a true goby in the family Gobiidae, but belongs to the closely related sleeper-goby family Eleotridae.

In nature, Mangrove Sleeper Gobies inhabit tidal channels, estuarine pools and slow-moving coastal waterways. These environments are shaped by changing tides, fluctuating salinity, soft sediments and dense tangles of roots, wood and vegetation. The fish can remain close to cover while watching for passing prey.

They are fascinating but specialised aquarium predators, best appreciated for their unusual appearance and stealthy behaviour rather than constant activity. Larger specimens may become territorial or opportunistically consume tankmates that can fit into their mouths.

Where do Mangrove Sleeper Gobies originate?

Butis gymnopomus is native to the tropical Indo-West Pacific, occurring around coastal estuaries, mangrove creeks and tidal rivers in parts of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, New Guinea and northern Australia. It is primarily associated with brackish coastal waters, although it may enter areas of lower salinity.

What water temperature suits Mangrove Sleeper Gobies?

Celsius: 2328 °C
Fahrenheit: 7482 °F

Which pH range is best for a Mangrove Sleeper Goby?

Ideal pH: 7.08.5

Should Mangrove Sleeper Gobies be kept alone or in groups?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Mangrove Sleeper Gobies need?

A single adult should have an aquarium of at least 150 litres, with a footprint of roughly 120 by 40 cm; a larger tank is preferable for long-term care or multiple fish. Use a secure lid because sleeper gobies can jump, and provide a sandy or fine-grained substrate with smooth rocks, mangrove-style roots, driftwood, caves and other shaded retreats. Moderate water movement, strong filtration and stable brackish conditions are important, while open areas should be left for short hunting movements.

How large can Mangrove Sleeper Gobies become?

Up to about 20 cm (8 inches) in adult length. Females may grow slightly larger and have a noticeably fuller body than males.

What should Mangrove Sleeper Gobies eat?

This carnivorous species should be offered meaty foods such as earthworms, prawns, mussel, chopped seafood, silversides and quality sinking carnivore pellets. Live or frozen foods are often accepted most readily, although healthy specimens can be gradually trained to take prepared diets. Feed appropriately sized portions and remove uneaten food, as these fish are messy predators.

Which tankmates can live with Mangrove Sleeper Gobies?

Mangrove Sleeper Gobies are best kept alone or with robust, similarly sized brackish-water fish that will not fit in their mouths. Suitable companions may include larger mollies, scats, monos and peaceful brackish gobies, provided the aquarium is spacious and territories are available. Avoid small fish, shrimp and other delicate invertebrates, which may be eaten, as well as highly aggressive species that may harass this ambush predator.

How can Mangrove Sleeper Gobies be bred?

Mangrove Sleeper Gobies are rarely bred in home aquariums. Spawning is believed to take place in a sheltered cavity, with the male guarding the adhesive eggs until they hatch. The larvae are small and planktonic, and raising them successfully would require carefully managed brackish or marine-leaning larval conditions and a continuous supply of appropriately sized live food.

How can male and female Mangrove Sleeper Gobies be distinguished?

Sexual differences are subtle. Mature females are generally deeper-bodied and fuller through the abdomen, while males may have a somewhat slimmer profile, but reliable identification is difficult outside the breeding period.
