What makes Malawi gar distinctive?

Despite its common name, the Malawi gar is not related to the long-snouted freshwater gars of North and Central America. It is a large, predatory haplochromine cichlid with a sharply pointed head, powerful jaws and a streamlined body adapted for pursuing smaller fish.

Adult males commonly develop rich blue colouration, often with darker markings and contrasting details around the fins. Females and immature fish are generally more subdued, showing grey, brown or silvery tones that help them blend into the rocky lake environment.

This species is an active and purposeful hunter. Malawi gar may patrol a territory, investigate crevices and ambush smaller fish, and it can become assertive towards rivals or similarly shaped cichlids. It is considerably more predatory than many of the algae-grazing mbuna commonly associated with Lake Malawi aquariums.

In the wild, Lichnochromis acuticeps is associated with the clear, alkaline waters of Lake Malawi. Its pointed profile and hunting behaviour have made it a distinctive species among the lake’s diverse cichlid fauna, although it is less commonly kept than many peacocks and mbuna.

Where do Malawi gar come from?

Malawi gar are endemic to Lake Malawi in East Africa. They occur around rocky and transitional habitats in the lake, particularly where there are crevices and broken rock that provide hunting areas and shelter.

What water temperature suits Malawi gar?

Celsius: 2528 °C
Fahrenheit: 7782 °F

Which pH range is best for Malawi gar?

Ideal pH: 7.88.6

How many Malawi gar should live together?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup does Malawi gar need?

A single Malawi gar needs an aquarium of at least 300 litres, with a footprint of around 150 cm by 45 cm or larger; a bigger aquarium is strongly preferred for adult specimens or a community. Use a sandy or fine-gravel substrate with substantial rockwork arranged into caves, ledges and territorial boundaries, while leaving open swimming space at the front. Secure all decorations firmly, as large cichlids can shift loose rocks while excavating or displaying. Strong filtration, good oxygenation and regular maintenance are important for this large, messy-feeding predator.

How large can Malawi gar become?

Up to 22 cm (8.7 inches) in total length. Males are typically larger and more heavily built than females.

What foods should Malawi gar be offered?

Malawi gar are primarily carnivorous predators. Offer a varied diet based on quality sinking cichlid pellets, prawns, mussel, earthworms and other meaty frozen foods, with appropriately sized live foods used occasionally. Juveniles need smaller portions more frequently, while adults should receive controlled meals to prevent obesity. Avoid relying on feeder fish, which can introduce disease and provide an unbalanced diet.

Which tankmates are compatible with Malawi gar?

Malawi gar are best kept with robust, similarly sized Lake Malawi cichlids that can tolerate assertive behaviour, such as larger haps and selected peacocks. Avoid small fish, delicate community species and slow-moving tankmates, as they may be harassed or swallowed. It is also wise to avoid combining them with extremely aggressive species or close rivals that compete for the same territory. A spacious aquarium with carefully chosen companions is preferable to a crowded mixed-Malawi setup.

How can Malawi gar be bred in the aquarium?

Malawi gar are maternal mouthbrooders. A male establishes a territory and courts a receptive female, which lays eggs on a clean surface before picking them up in her mouth. The male’s egg spots help fertilise the clutch as she attempts to collect them. The female usually carries the eggs and fry for around three weeks, releasing the young when they are free-swimming. In a dedicated breeding aquarium, provide cover and remove tankmates that may prey on the fry; newly released young can be fed finely crushed flakes or small live foods.

How can male and female Malawi gar be identified?

Males are usually larger and develop stronger blue colouration, especially across the head and body, with more extended and strongly marked fins. Females remain smaller and are generally grey-brown or silvery, while immature males may resemble females until they mature.
