Longfin Leopard Danio Care Guide - Tank Setup, Diet & Breeding

Longfin Leopard Danios are an attractive long-finned variety of the familiar Zebrafish. Their slender, lively bodies carry a leopard-like pattern of dark blue or black spots and broken markings over a silvery gold background, while the extended fins give them a more flowing appearance than standard danios.

These are energetic, social fish that spend much of their time in the upper and middle levels of the aquarium. They are constantly on the move and become most confident when kept in a proper group, where they display active shoaling behaviour and occasional harmless chasing.

In nature, Danio rerio inhabits shallow streams, seasonal pools, rice fields and gently flowing waterways. These environments can vary considerably through the year, and the species is well adapted to oxygen-rich water, changing flow and abundant marginal vegetation.

The Leopard Danio pattern is a selectively developed aquarium strain rather than a separate wild species. Its long fins make it especially eye-catching, although they can be more vulnerable to fin-nipping tankmates than the shorter-finned form.

Longfin Leopard Danios are a selectively bred long-finned colour and pattern variety of the Zebrafish, Danio rerio. The wild species originates in South Asia, particularly the Ganges and Brahmaputra river systems of India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.

A group of Longfin Leopard Danios should have at least 60 litres, with a tank around 90 cm long preferred because swimming length is more important than height. Use a secure lid, as danios can jump, and provide good filtration with moderate surface movement and well-oxygenated water. A dark sand or fine-gravel substrate, hardy plants along the sides and rear, and open swimming space across the centre create a suitable layout. Driftwood, smooth stones and floating plants can provide cover without restricting their active swimming area.

Up to 5 cm (2 in) in adult body length. Females are often slightly larger and noticeably deeper-bodied than males, particularly when carrying eggs.

Longfin Leopard Danios are omnivores and do best on a varied diet. Offer a quality small tropical flake or micro-pellet as the staple, supplemented with foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae and other appropriately sized frozen or live foods. Occasional finely crushed algae-based foods can add variety. Feed small portions once or twice daily, ensuring that food remains small enough for their narrow mouths.

Longfin Leopard Danios are peaceful community fish and can be kept with similarly sized, active species such as other danios, small rasboras, many tetras, white cloud mountain minnows, Corydoras and peaceful loaches. Choose tankmates that appreciate comparable water movement and temperatures. Avoid slow, timid fish that may be stressed by their constant activity, as well as fin-nipping species and large predators that could damage their long fins or swallow them.

Longfin Leopard Danios are egg-scattering fish that readily breed in mature aquariums. Condition a group with plenty of live or frozen foods, then place the adults in a separate breeding tank with gentle flow and a layer of spawning mops, fine mesh or marbles to protect the eggs. They usually spawn in the morning, scattering adhesive eggs among the plants. Remove the adults after spawning, as they may eat the eggs. Hatching generally occurs within two to three days, and the tiny fry can be raised on infusoria or a suitable liquid fry food before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp.

Males are usually slimmer, more streamlined and may show stronger golden-yellow tones, while females tend to be fuller-bodied with a rounder abdomen. The difference is most obvious when mature females are carrying eggs.
