Golden White Cloud Minnow Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

Golden White Cloud Minnows are a bright, warm-gold colour variety of the White Cloud Mountain Minnow. Their slender bodies carry a shimmering lateral stripe, contrasting red accents on the fins and a dark eye that gives the fish an alert, jewel-like appearance. Selective breeding has enhanced their yellow-golden colour while retaining the compact shape of the original species.

These are lively, peaceful schooling fish that spend much of their time in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. They are active without being aggressive, and a group displays its best colours and most natural behaviour when the fish can move together through open water.

In the wild, Tanichthys albonubes inhabits cool, clear streams and shallow waterways with gentle to moderate flow. These habitats typically contain gravel, sand, aquatic vegetation and overhanging plant growth, providing both open swimming areas and shelter.

The species was first discovered near White Cloud Mountain in Guangdong during the 1930s. It became popular in the aquarium trade soon afterwards, and the golden form is now widely kept as a colourful, adaptable community fish. Although small, it is generally more comfortable in a properly sized group than as an isolated individual.

Golden White Cloud Minnows are a selectively bred golden colour form of Tanichthys albonubes, a species native to southern China, especially the Pearl River basin in Guangdong Province, including the region around White Cloud Mountain. Wild populations have also been associated with nearby parts of northern Vietnam. They come from clear, cool freshwater streams and small mountain waterways in East Asia.

A group should be kept in an aquarium of at least 40 litres, with a footprint of around 60 by 30 cm providing more useful swimming space than a tall, narrow tank. Use a secure lid because these active minnows can jump, and provide a gentle current with good oxygenation. A sand or fine-gravel substrate works well, together with hardy plants, moss, floating cover, smooth stones and some open water for schooling. Their setup should reflect a cool stream environment and avoid prolonged tropical temperatures.

Up to about 4 cm (1.6 inches) in total length. Females are usually slightly larger and deeper-bodied than males.

Golden White Cloud Minnows are omnivores and benefit from a varied diet. Offer a quality small flake or micro-pellet as the staple, supplemented with baby brine shrimp, daphnia, mosquito larvae and other small frozen or live foods. They also graze on tiny aquatic invertebrates, algae and microorganisms in the aquarium. Feed small portions that the group can finish quickly, using suitably fine foods for juveniles and newly hatched fry.

Golden White Cloud Minnows are peaceful community fish suited to similarly gentle, cool-water species. Suitable companions include other White Cloud varieties, zebra danios, small hillstream loaches, peaceful Corydoras that tolerate the same temperatures, and other small, non-aggressive Asian minnows. Avoid large or predatory fish, fin-nippers, boisterous species and warm-water fish such as many tropical tetras, guppies and angelfish. They should also not be housed with species likely to swallow them or outcompete them for food.

Golden White Cloud Minnows are egg scatterers that often breed readily in mature aquariums. A breeding group can be conditioned with varied, protein-rich foods before being placed among fine-leaved plants, spawning mops or a dedicated breeding setup. The adults may eat the eggs, so remove them after spawning or protect the eggs with a mesh barrier. Eggs usually hatch within several days, and the tiny fry can be raised on infusoria or other suitably small foods before moving on to newly hatched brine shrimp and powdered foods.

Males are generally slimmer and more vividly coloured, with brighter red fin markings and a more streamlined profile. Females are usually fuller through the abdomen, particularly when carrying eggs, and may appear slightly larger and less intensely coloured.
