Golden King Tiger Plec L333 Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding
What are Golden King Tiger Plecs like?
The Golden King Tiger Plec is a striking Hypancistrus catfish known in the aquarium trade as L333. Its dark brown to black body is covered with irregular creamy-gold markings, often forming bold broken stripes and labyrinthine patterns. Individual fish vary considerably, and the pattern can become more intricate as they mature.
This is a compact, heavily built suckermouth catfish with a broad head, armour-like plates and strong pectoral and dorsal spines. Unlike algae-grazing plecs, it has a relatively small mouth suited to picking animal foods and invertebrates from rocky surfaces.
L333 Plecs are generally peaceful with other species, although adults can become territorial towards one another, particularly around preferred caves. They are most active at dusk and during the night, spending much of the day resting in shelters or tucked beneath wood and rockwork.
In the wild, this species group inhabits fast-flowing sections of the Rio Xingu, where rocky rapids, strong currents and high oxygen levels shape its behaviour. The name “Golden King Tiger” is a trade name rather than a formally described species, and L333 remains identified as Hypancistrus sp. L333.
Where do Golden King Tiger Plecs originate?
Golden King Tiger Plecs are from the Rio Xingu basin in Pará, northern Brazil, South America. They are associated with clear, warm, highly oxygenated stretches of river containing rocky bottoms, crevices and submerged wood.
What water temperature suits Golden King Tiger Plecs?
Which pH range is best for Golden King Tiger Plecs?
How many Golden King Tiger Plecs can live together?
Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.
How should a Golden King Tiger Plec aquarium be set up?
A single Golden King Tiger Plec should have an aquarium of at least 120 litres, ideally measuring around 90 × 40 × 40 cm, with a larger footprint preferred for adults or groups. Use powerful but well-oxygenated filtration and maintain good circulation without leaving the fish unable to rest. Provide smooth rocks, robust driftwood and several narrow caves or tubes, including separate shelters for each fish when keeping more than one. A fine sand or smooth-gravel substrate is safest for the belly and barbels, while subdued lighting and shaded areas help the fish feel secure.
How large do Golden King Tiger Plecs become?
Up to around 15 cm (6 inches) in total length. Males are often slightly larger and more robust than females, although size varies with diet, age and conditions.
What should Golden King Tiger Plecs eat?
Golden King Tiger Plecs are primarily carnivorous and should be offered a varied diet of high-quality sinking carnivore pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and chopped seafood. Occasional vegetables such as courgette or shelled peas may be accepted, but plant matter should not form the main part of the diet. Feed after lights out or at dusk so food reaches this nocturnal catfish, and remove uneaten portions promptly.
Which tankmates work well with Golden King Tiger Plecs?
Golden King Tiger Plecs suit peaceful community aquariums containing similarly sized tetras, rasboras, peaceful barbs, pencilfish, dwarf cichlids and other calm South American fish. They can also be kept with peaceful bottom dwellers when enough caves and floor space are available. Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species, very boisterous fish and highly competitive bottom feeders. Multiple L333 Plecs may be housed together in a spacious aquarium, but each should have access to a separate cave or refuge.
How can you breed Golden King Tiger Plecs?
Golden King Tiger Plecs are cave-spawning catfish that can be bred in a mature aquarium. Provide several snug ceramic or slate caves, with openings only slightly wider than the fish. After courtship, the female deposits a batch of eggs inside a cave and the male guards and fans them until they hatch. The fry can be raised on finely crushed sinking foods, specialised pleco fry foods and small meaty foods, with excellent water quality and regular maintenance.
How can you distinguish male and female Golden King Tiger Plecs?
Mature males usually develop noticeably longer odontodes or bristles along the cheeks, pectoral-fin spines and sides of the body, and may have a broader head. Females are generally rounder through the abdomen and have fewer, shorter odontodes, particularly when viewed from above.
