What are Ghost Plecs like?

The Ghost Plec L141 is a handsome armoured catfish with a dark brown to charcoal body marked by pale cream or yellowish spotting and irregular reticulation. Its flattened shape, broad head and sucker-like mouth are characteristic of the loricariid family, while rows of bony plates protect the body from head to tail.

This species is generally peaceful, secretive and most active from dusk onwards. It spends much of its time clinging to solid surfaces or resting beneath wood and rock, emerging to investigate food and its surroundings when the aquarium becomes quieter.

In the wild, Ancistomus snethlageae is associated with the clear, well-oxygenated waters of the Xingu system. Rocky bottoms, strong local currents, submerged branches and shaded cracks create the complex habitat that allows these catfish to shelter during daylight and forage after dark.

Although often sold as an algae-eating pleco, the Ghost Plec is better understood as an adaptable omnivore that grazes biofilm while also taking animal and vegetable foods. Individual fish can develop considerable personality once settled, but they remain less conspicuous than many other popular aquarium catfish.

Where do Ghost Plecs originate?

Ancistomus snethlageae is native to the Rio Xingu basin in Pará, northern Brazil, in South America. It inhabits flowing stretches and rocky tributaries where submerged wood, stones and crevices provide shelter.

What water temperature suits Ghost Plecs best?

Celsius: 2430 °C
Fahrenheit: 7686 °F

Which pH range keeps Ghost Plecs comfortable?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

Should Ghost Plecs be kept singly or in groups?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

How should a Ghost Plec aquarium be set up?

A single adult Ghost Plec should have at least a 200-litre aquarium measuring around 120 × 45 × 45 cm, with a larger footprint recommended for multiple adults or a community group. Use efficient filtration and strong circulation to maintain clean, oxygen-rich water, while providing shaded caves, smooth rocks, driftwood and several separate retreats. A soft sand or fine rounded-gravel substrate is preferable, with sturdy decor arranged to create crevices without unstable piles. Live plants may be used if firmly rooted, although wood, rockwork and sheltered surfaces are especially important.

How large do Ghost Plecs become?

Up to about 15 cm (6 in) in total length. Males are usually larger and more heavily built than females, although individual size varies.

What should Ghost Plecs eat?

Offer a varied diet based on sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based foods, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach or green beans, supplemented with quality sinking catfish pellets. Occasional meaty foods such as frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp or insect-based tablets are useful, particularly for growing fish and conditioning adults for breeding. Remove uneaten vegetables before they decay, and do not rely on algae growing naturally in the aquarium as its only food source.

Which fish make good Ghost Plec tankmates?

Ghost Plecs are suitable for peaceful community aquariums containing similarly sized tetras, pencilfish, rasboras, peaceful barbs, dwarf cichlids, hatchetfish and other non-aggressive South American species. They can also live with peaceful bottom dwellers when there are plenty of hiding places, but avoid housing them with boisterous cichlids, fin-nipping fish or highly aggressive catfish. Adult males may defend caves and should not be crowded with rival plecos or other strongly territorial bottom-dwellers.

How can aquarists breed Ghost Plecs?

Ghost Plecs are cave-spawning catfish. Provide a suitably sized cave or narrow ceramic tube, clean, well-oxygenated water and a varied, nutritious diet. The male selects and cleans the cave, then guards the eggs and fans them with his fins until they hatch. Once the fry become free-swimming, offer very small sinking foods and finely softened vegetables, while protecting them from larger tankmates.

How can male and female Ghost Plecs be distinguished?

Mature males are generally larger, with a broader head and more pronounced bristles or odontodes on the cheeks, pectoral-fin rays and body. Females tend to have a rounder abdomen and noticeably fewer, shorter odontodes.
