German Red Ram Care Guide - Setup, Diet & Breeding
What are German Red Rams like?
German Red is a selectively bred colour form of the Ram Cichlid, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi. It has the compact, high-bodied shape typical of the species, with vivid red coloration across much of the body and fins, often combined with blue or turquoise iridescent markings and dark facial details. Colour intensity varies between individual fish and breeding lines.
These are small but characterful dwarf cichlids. They spend much of their time close to the bottom, investigating the substrate and defending a modest territory, while established pairs may display coordinated courtship and parental behaviour. Despite their cichlid heritage, they are generally peaceful when kept with appropriate companions.
In nature, Ram Cichlids inhabit warm, slow-flowing waters associated with the Orinoco basin. Their habitats often contain fine sand, leaf litter, submerged roots, and scattered vegetation, creating a mosaic of open feeding areas and sheltered sites.
German Red Rams are popular for their striking colour and expressive behaviour, but they are also more delicate than many commonly kept dwarf cichlids. The German Red pattern is an aquarium-bred appearance rather than a separate wild species, and the quality and health of fish can differ considerably between sources.
Where do German Red Rams originate?
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi is native to the Orinoco River basin of Venezuela and eastern Colombia in northern South America. Wild fish occur in slow-moving streams, shallow pools, and flooded areas with warm, soft water, sandy bottoms, and abundant cover.
What water temperature suits German Red Rams?
Which pH range is best for German Red Rams?
Should German Red Rams be kept as a pair or group?
Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.
How should a tank for German Red Rams be set up?
A pair should have an aquarium of at least 60 litres, with a footprint around 60 × 30 cm or larger; a bigger tank is preferable for a community setup or multiple territories. Use fine sand or another smooth substrate so the fish can sift and forage safely, and provide driftwood, rocks, broad-leaved plants, and small caves or spawning surfaces. Open areas should be left between shelters, while dense planting and visual barriers help reduce territorial tension. Gentle water movement and subdued lighting suit their natural habitat, and stable, exceptionally clean water is important.
How large do German Red Rams become?
Males usually reach about 6–7 cm (2.4–2.8 inches), while females are generally smaller at around 5–6 cm (2.0–2.4 inches).
What foods should German Red Rams receive?
German Red Rams are omnivores that naturally pick through fine substrate for small invertebrates, crustaceans, algae, and other organic material. Offer a varied diet based on high-quality small cichlid pellets or granules, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and mosquito larvae. Small, regular meals help ensure that timid individuals receive enough food without leaving excess waste in the aquarium.
Which fish can live peacefully with German Red Rams?
German Red Rams are best kept with calm, warm-water community fish such as cardinal tetras, rummynose tetras, pencilfish, small peaceful rasboras, and suitable Corydoras species. They can also live with other peaceful bottom-dwellers when the aquarium provides enough territory. Avoid aggressive or boisterous cichlids, fin-nipping species, large predatory fish, and fish that demand significantly cooler water. A bonded pair may become territorial when spawning, particularly toward other bottom-dwelling fish.
How can German Red Rams be encouraged to breed?
German Red Rams are substrate spawners that usually form a bonded pair. The female lays several dozen to a few hundred eggs on a flat stone, piece of slate, or other smooth surface, and both parents may guard and fan the clutch. Spawning is encouraged by warm, very clean, soft, slightly acidic water and a varied diet of live or frozen foods. The eggs generally hatch after around two to three days, with free-swimming fry following a few days later; newly free-swimming fry can be fed infusoria or another suitably tiny first food.
How can male and female German Red Rams be distinguished?
Males are typically larger, with a more elongated body and extended dorsal and anal fins; the first rays of the dorsal fin may be noticeably longer. Females are usually shorter and deeper-bodied, often with a more prominent pink or reddish belly, especially when mature and ready to spawn.
