What are Altifrons Eartheaters like?

Geophagus altifrons is a large, impressive eartheater with a deep-bodied profile, a sloping forehead and an elongated dorsal fin. Adults typically show a silvery to blue-grey base colour, with iridescent blue-green markings and darker vertical shading that becomes more pronounced with mood, age and breeding condition.

Like other Geophagus species, this cichlid constantly sifts mouthfuls of sand through its gills. This distinctive feeding behaviour gives the fish its common name and makes it fascinating to watch as it searches for small invertebrates and other edible particles among the substrate.

Altifrons Eartheaters are generally peaceful for their size, although they become more territorial when spawning. They are social fish that establish a hierarchy within a group, and individuals often interact through displays, short chases and subtle changes in colour rather than through serious aggression.

In nature, they are associated with Amazonian rivers and tributaries where sandy beds, submerged branches and gently flowing water create a varied underwater landscape. Their combination of size, personality and relatively restrained temperament makes them a popular choice for experienced keepers of large South American cichlid aquariums.

Where do Altifrons Eartheaters originate?

Geophagus altifrons is native to the Amazon basin of South America, particularly river systems and tributaries in Brazil. It inhabits flowing freshwater environments with sandy bottoms, submerged wood and variable amounts of leaf litter.

What water temperature suits Altifrons Eartheaters?

Celsius: 2430 °C
Fahrenheit: 7586 °F

Which pH range is best for Geophagus altifrons?

Ideal pH: 57.5

How many Altifrons Eartheaters should live together?

Keep at least 5 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

What aquarium setup do Altifrons Eartheaters need?

A group of Geophagus altifrons should be kept in an aquarium of at least 400 litres, with a larger footprint of around 150 x 50 cm or more strongly preferred for adult fish. Use a deep layer of fine, smooth sand that will not damage the mouth or gills, together with rounded wood, smooth stones and open swimming areas. Powerful filtration, good oxygenation and regular maintenance are important, while plants should be securely rooted or attached because the fish may uproot them while sifting.

How large can Geophagus altifrons become?

Males can reach about 25 cm (10 in) in total length, while females are usually smaller at around 20–22 cm (8–8.5 in).

What should Altifrons Eartheaters eat?

Offer a varied omnivorous diet based on high-quality sinking cichlid pellets or granules, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp and chopped earthworm. Small portions of vegetable matter can also be included. Feed sinking foods so the fish can sift and search naturally, and avoid relying on floating foods that encourage surface feeding.

Which fish make good companions for Geophagus altifrons?

Suitable tankmates include robust but peaceful South American fish such as larger tetras, peaceful characins, severums, festivums, peaceful loricariid catfish and larger Corydoras species. They can also be kept with other compatible Geophagus in a suitably spacious aquarium. Avoid aggressive Central American cichlids, fin-nipping species and very small fish that may be stressed or swallowed; keeping them with highly boisterous or severely territorial tankmates is also best avoided.

How can Geophagus altifrons be encouraged to breed?

Geophagus altifrons are substrate-spawning cichlids that form pair bonds when mature. Provide a broad, smooth stone or another firm surface for spawning, along with excellent water quality and peaceful surroundings. The female usually tends the eggs and wrigglers closely, while both parents defend the brood; the free-swimming fry can be offered newly hatched brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods.

How can male and female Altifrons Eartheaters be distinguished?

Mature males are generally larger and may develop longer, more pointed extensions on the dorsal and anal fins, along with a fuller head profile. Females are usually shorter-bodied and less strongly fin-extended, although sexing young fish is difficult.
