What are Fairy Corys like as aquarium fish?

The Fairy Cory is a small, delicately marked armoured catfish with a pale silver to cream body, a dark horizontal stripe through the eye and fine dark markings across the back and flanks. Its transparent fins and gently patterned appearance give it a subtle, elegant look rather than the bold contrast seen in some larger Corydoras species.

These peaceful bottom-dwellers spend much of their time exploring the substrate with sensitive barbels, searching for tiny food particles. They may rest together among plants or decor, but they become most active and confident when kept in a proper group of their own kind.

Like other Corydoras, Fairy Corys frequently rise to the surface to gulp air. This is a natural adaptation that allows them to supplement the oxygen extracted through their gills, rather than a sign that they are unhealthy or should be kept in poorly oxygenated water.

In the wild, they are associated with shallow Amazonian waterways, where sand, leaf litter, submerged roots and gentle currents create a complex habitat. Their peaceful nature and manageable adult size have made them a popular choice for planted community aquariums.

Where do Fairy Corys occur in the wild?

Fairy Corys come from the upper Amazon basin in north-western South America, particularly the Napo River drainage in Ecuador and neighbouring parts of Peru. They inhabit shallow, slow-moving tributaries and forest streams with soft substrates and clear to lightly stained water.

What water temperature suits Fairy Corys best?

Celsius: 2226 °C
Fahrenheit: 7279 °F

Which pH range keeps Fairy Corys comfortable?

Ideal pH: 6.07.5

How large should a group of Fairy Corys be?

Keep at least 6 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a tank for Fairy Corys be arranged?

A group of Fairy Corys should have at least 75 litres, with a floor area of around 60 x 30 cm as a practical minimum; a longer 80 cm aquarium is even better for an active group. Use smooth fine sand or another rounded, non-abrasive substrate to protect their barbels, along with driftwood, broad-leaved plants, shaded areas and open patches for foraging. Gentle water movement, good oxygenation and unobstructed access to the bottom are important, while leaf litter can help recreate the character of their natural forest streams.

How large do Fairy Corys grow?

Females reach about 4.5 cm (1.8 inches) in length, while males are usually smaller at around 4 cm (1.6 inches).

What should Fairy Corys eat?

Fairy Corys are omnivorous foragers and should receive a varied diet of sinking micro-pellets or quality bottom-feeding tablets, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, cyclops and brine shrimp. Small portions of finely chopped foods are suitable for their mouths. They should not be expected to survive on leftover food alone, and feeding should ensure that every fish gets access to nutritious food at the substrate.

Which fish make good companions for Fairy Corys?

Fairy Corys are gentle community fish that can be kept with small, peaceful species such as ember tetras, neon tetras, small rasboras, pencilfish, honey gouramis, clown killifish and other calm South American community fish. They also mix well with other peaceful Corydoras when there is enough room and the groups are not overcrowded. Avoid large or aggressive cichlids, boisterous barbs, fin-nipping fish and predatory species, as well as tankmates that compete aggressively for food on the bottom.

How can you encourage Fairy Corys to spawn?

Fairy Corys are egg scatterers and can be encouraged to spawn with plentiful live or frozen foods followed by partial water changes using slightly cooler, clean water. A female deposits adhesive eggs on aquarium glass, plant leaves or other smooth surfaces while one or more males fertilise them. Remove the adults or transfer the eggs to a separate hatching container, as the eggs may be eaten. The eggs usually hatch in around three to five days, and the fry can be raised on finely powdered food and newly hatched brine shrimp.

How can you distinguish male and female Fairy Corys?

Females are generally broader-bodied and slightly longer than males, especially when viewed from above. Males tend to be slimmer and more streamlined, although the difference can be subtle in young fish.
