What are Electric Eels like?
The Electric Eel is a remarkable South American knifefish with a long, cylindrical body, a blunt head and a tapering tail. Despite its common name, it is not a true eel. Its body is mostly occupied by electrical organs, while a long undulating anal fin provides the propulsion that allows it to swim forwards and backwards with impressive control.
Electrophorus electricus produces powerful electrical discharges for defence and for incapacitating prey. Weaker electrical signals help it navigate and detect nearby objects in dark or muddy water, where vision is of limited use. Its ability to breathe atmospheric air allows it to survive in warm, oxygen-poor waters, although it must regularly visit the surface.
Adults are generally dark grey to brown on the back, often becoming lighter or yellowish underneath. Young fish may show more contrasting markings, and their appearance can vary with age and locality. The body is scaleless or covered with very small scales, giving the fish a smooth, distinctive appearance.
Electric Eels are solitary, powerful predators that spend much of their time cruising slowly through cover or resting among submerged roots and vegetation. They can consume fish, amphibians, crustaceans, insects and other suitably sized animals. Their size, strength and electrical discharge make them animals for specialist or public-aquarium displays rather than ordinary community aquariums.

What aquarium setup do Electric Eels require?
An adult Electric Eel requires a purpose-built public-aquarium or specialist facility, not a conventional home aquarium. A practical adult enclosure should hold at least 20,000 litres, with a larger system strongly preferred, and measure roughly 5 m long by 2.5 m wide with at least 1.5 m of water depth. Use a secure, escape-proof cover, powerful biological filtration, protected electrical equipment, strong aeration and generous open swimming space. Smooth, robust construction is essential; avoid sharp decor, exposed heaters and loose equipment. A deep fine-sand substrate, sturdy submerged roots, rounded wood and artificial or firmly anchored plants can provide cover without creating hazards. The system should offer easy surface access for air breathing and be designed so maintenance can be performed without entering the water.
How large can Electric Eels become?
Up to 250 cm (98.4 in) in length and around 20 kg (44 lb) in exceptional specimens. Females are generally larger and heavier than males.
What should Electric Eels eat?
Electric Eels are carnivorous predators. Suitable foods include whole freshwater fish, prawns, crayfish, mussels and other substantial meaty foods, with prey sizes matched to the eel's mouth. Whole foods provide a better nutritional profile than relying exclusively on fillets, and variety is beneficial. Uneaten food should be removed promptly, and feeding must be carried out with suitable long-handled equipment and strict electrical-safety procedures.
Which tankmates can live with Electric Eels?
Electric Eels are best kept alone. They will eventually eat fish and other animals small enough to swallow, while similarly sized or aggressive tankmates may injure them or be injured by their electrical discharges. Keeping more than one also creates a serious welfare and management challenge because they are not naturally shoaling fish. Any display companions would need to be exceptionally large, robust and carefully assessed in a professional facility, with no guarantee of compatibility.
How are Electric Eels bred in captivity?
Breeding Electric Eels is rarely achieved in private aquariums and is primarily undertaken in large public or specialist facilities. In nature, males construct floating nests from plant material and saliva during periods of falling water levels, while females deposit large numbers of eggs into the nest. The male guards the eggs and newly hatched young. Successful reproduction requires a very large habitat, excellent water quality, mature fish and carefully managed seasonal changes; electric eels should never be handled during breeding attempts.
Are male and female Electric Eels easy to tell apart?
Females are usually larger and heavier than males, particularly when mature. Otherwise, the sexes are difficult to distinguish reliably by external appearance outside the breeding season.
