What are Electric Blue Haps like?

The Electric Blue Hap is a striking Malawi cichlid known for the intense metallic blue colouration of mature males. Depending on age, mood and locality, the body may show deep cobalt, powder blue or violet tones, often with darker edging on the fins. Females and young fish are much more subdued, usually silver-grey with faint patterning.

Sciaenochromis fryeri is an active, confident predator that spends much of its time cruising through open water and investigating the rocks around it. Males can be territorial, especially when displaying or defending a breeding area, although this species is generally less strongly associated with rock-dwelling behaviour than many mbuna.

In the wild, Electric Blue Haps inhabit the transition between rocky shoreline zones and open sandy or deeper water. Their streamlined shape suits a hunting lifestyle, allowing them to pursue small fish and other aquatic prey rather than scrape algae from rock surfaces.

The species has become one of the most recognisable Lake Malawi cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Its vivid adult colour and comparatively elegant profile make it popular, but its mature size and territorial nature mean it is best suited to a spacious African cichlid community rather than a general tropical aquarium.

Where do Electric Blue Haps originate?

Electric Blue Haps are native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, particularly the rocky and open-water habitats around the lake’s northern and central regions. They are found in the clear, alkaline freshwater of the Malawi Rift Valley system.

What water temperature suits Electric Blue Haps?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7582 °F

Which pH range is best for Electric Blue Haps?

Ideal pH: 7.88.6

How many Electric Blue Haps should live together?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Electric Blue Haps need?

A single specimen requires at least 250 litres, while a male with several females or a mixed Malawi cichlid community is better housed in 300 litres or more. Aim for an aquarium at least 120 cm long, with additional length and floor space preferred for groups. Use a sand or fine-gravel substrate with sturdy rocks arranged into caves and visual barriers, while leaving generous open swimming space. Secure the rockwork directly on the tank base, provide strong filtration and water movement, and use a tightly fitting lid because large cichlids can jump.

How large do Electric Blue Haps become?

Males can reach approximately 20 cm (8 inches) in length, while females are usually smaller at around 15–16 cm (6–6.3 inches).

What should Electric Blue Haps eat?

Electric Blue Haps are carnivorous predators and should receive a varied diet based on quality cichlid pellets or granules formulated for carnivorous Malawi cichlids. Supplement these with frozen or live foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp and krill in moderation. Feed modest portions rather than large meals, and avoid making mammalian meats or fatty foods part of their regular diet.

Which tankmates are compatible with Electric Blue Haps?

Suitable companions include similarly sized Lake Malawi haps and peaceful-to-moderately assertive peacocks, provided the aquarium is spacious and the fish have compatible water requirements. Larger, robust Malawi cichlids may also work when aggression and territory are carefully managed. Avoid small, slow-moving or timid fish, as well as delicate community species, fin-nippers and most dwarf cichlids. Do not combine them with closely related Sciaenochromis forms if preserving pure strains is a priority, and avoid overcrowding with highly aggressive mbuna.

How can Electric Blue Haps be bred successfully?

Electric Blue Haps are maternal mouthbrooders. A mature male displays around a chosen spawning site, where the female lays eggs and immediately picks them up before fertilisation is completed in her mouth. She normally incubates the brood for around three weeks, during which time she may eat little. For good breeding results, provide one male with several females, use stable alkaline water, and move the holding female to a separate tank if protecting the fry is important. Newly released fry can be raised on finely crushed flake food and baby brine shrimp.

How can male and female Electric Blue Haps be identified?

Mature males are noticeably larger and develop the vivid electric-blue body colour for which the species is named, often with darker fin margins and egg spots on the anal fin. Females remain silvery or grey-brown, may show faint horizontal markings, and have less intensely coloured fins.
