What are Dwarf Synodontis like?
Dwarf Synodontis are small, attractive members of the mochokid catfish family. Their compact bodies are usually brown to dark grey, marked with irregular pale patches or mottling that helps them blend into shaded streambeds, roots and leaf litter. Like other synodontids, they have three pairs of barbels around the mouth and a strong, defensive dorsal spine.
This is a secretive but personable bottom-dweller that becomes more confident when kept with several of its own kind. Individuals may rest beneath wood or overhangs during the day before emerging to explore after dark, and their activity often increases around feeding time. They can occasionally adopt an upside-down or angled swimming posture, although they are not as consistently inverted as the familiar upside-down catfish, Synodontis nigriventris.
In the wild, Dwarf Synodontis inhabit warm forest waterways, tributaries and quiet marginal areas where submerged roots, branches and leaf debris provide shelter. Their mottled colouring and tactile barbels are well suited to navigating dark water and locating food over soft bottoms.
