Dwarf Anchor Catfish Care Guide - Habitat, Feeding & Breeding

Dwarf Anchor Catfish are tiny, wonderfully unusual bottom-dwellers with a broad, flattened head, a tapered body and prominent barbels. Their mottled brown, tan and grey patterning breaks up their outline among gravel, stones and leaf litter, while the strong pectoral and dorsal spines give them a distinctive, armoured appearance. The species is also known in the aquarium trade as the Asian stone catfish.

These catfish are peaceful and generally secretive, spending much of the day resting among cover before becoming more active at dusk and during the night. They move in short, deliberate bursts over the substrate, using their barbels to investigate food and surfaces. Although they are not a tightly coordinated shoaling fish, they are more confident and visible when kept in a small group.

In the wild, Erethistes jerdoni inhabits shallow, flowing waters with clean, well-oxygenated conditions. Its cryptic colouring and compact body suit a life among pebbles, submerged leaves and small rocky shelters, where it can remain difficult to spot even when it is close to the front of the aquarium.

The Dwarf Anchor Catfish belongs to the family Erethistidae, a group of small Asian catfish adapted to life around streambeds. Its modest size makes it appealing for carefully planned peaceful aquariums, but its spines and retiring nature mean it should be handled and housed with consideration.

Dwarf Anchor Catfish are native to northern India, particularly clear, shallow streams and tributaries in the Himalayan foothills. Their range is associated with the Ganges drainage in South Asia.

A group of Dwarf Anchor Catfish should have at least a 40-litre aquarium, with a floor area of roughly 60 × 30 cm preferred over a tall, narrow tank. Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel so their barbels and underside are not damaged, and provide shaded retreats with rounded stones, small caves, driftwood, leaf litter and clumps of moss or hardy plants. Good filtration, regular maintenance and strong oxygenation are important, with gentle to moderate flow that resembles a clean stream without constantly displacing the fish.

Up to about 3.5 cm (1.4 in) in total length. Females are usually slightly larger and fuller-bodied than males, while males tend to remain slimmer.

This small catfish is an omnivorous micro-predator that feeds on insect larvae, tiny crustaceans, worms and other small organisms found around the streambed. Offer a varied diet of sinking micro-pellets, crushed quality catfish wafers, frozen or live bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods. Feed after the aquarium lights dim so these nocturnal fish have a fair opportunity to eat, and ensure food reaches the bottom rather than relying on leftover flakes.

Dwarf Anchor Catfish can be kept with other gentle, small-sized community fish that prefer similar soft to neutral, well-oxygenated water. Suitable companions include small rasboras, peaceful danios, diminutive tetras, white cloud mountain minnows where temperatures are appropriate, otocinclus and other calm small catfish. Avoid large or boisterous species, fin-nippers, aggressive bottom-dwellers and fish capable of swallowing them. Very active tankmates may outcompete them for food, while large crayfish and predatory loaches are unsuitable.

Dwarf Anchor Catfish are egg scatterers that can spawn in a mature, well-maintained aquarium when offered plentiful live or frozen foods and slightly cooler, well-oxygenated water. They deposit small adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, moss, leaf litter or sheltered crevices, with no parental care after spawning. To raise fry, remove the adults or protect the eggs and feed the tiny young suitably sized foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp.

Females are generally broader through the abdomen and slightly larger overall, especially when carrying eggs. Males are usually more slender, although the difference can be subtle in young or poorly conditioned fish.
