What are Daktari Cichlids like?

The Daktari is a colourful Lake Malawi mbuna known for the strong contrast between the sexes. Males are typically blue to bluish-grey with dark vertical barring, while females are often yellow or golden, giving a group a striking two-tone appearance. Colour intensity varies between specimens, age and locality, and some fish show more subdued or mixed markings.

Like other mbuna, Daktari Cichlids are active rock-dwellers with a confident, territorial temperament. They spend much of their time weaving between rocks, defending feeding areas and grazing surfaces for the algae and microorganisms that grow there.

In the wild, these fish are associated with the rocky shoreline habitats of Lake Malawi. Their specialised teeth allow them to scrape aufwuchs from rock faces, and their compact, laterally compressed bodies help them move through narrow gaps and caves.

The name “Daktari” is a trade name rather than a universally accepted formal species name. Aquarium specimens are therefore best identified and selected through their appearance, provenance and the reputation of the breeder or supplier.

Where do Daktari Cichlids originate?

Daktari Cichlids are an undescribed mbuna from Lake Malawi in East Africa. The name Maylandia sp. ‘daktari’ is used in the aquarium trade because its formal scientific identity and precise collection locality are not consistently established.

What water temperature suits Daktari Cichlids?

Celsius: 2428 °C
Fahrenheit: 7682 °F

Which pH range keeps Daktari Cichlids thriving?

Ideal pH: 7.88.5

How many Daktari Cichlids should live together?

Keep at least 4 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Daktari Cichlid aquarium be arranged?

A group should have at least 200 litres, with a footprint of about 120 × 40 cm or larger; a longer aquarium is preferable because it provides more territory and helps disperse aggression. Use a sturdy arrangement of rounded rocks to create caves, crevices and separate territories, while leaving open swimming space at the front. A fine sand or smooth-gravel substrate suits their natural foraging behaviour, and robust plants such as Anubias may be used if desired, although plants are not essential. Strong biological filtration, good oxygenation and stable alkaline, mineral-rich water are important.

How large do Daktari Cichlids become?

Males reach approximately 10 cm (4 in) in length, while females are usually smaller at around 8–9 cm (3.1–3.5 in).

What should Daktari Cichlids eat?

Daktari Cichlids are primarily herbivorous grazers. Offer a staple diet based on quality spirulina or algae-rich flakes and pellets, supplemented with blanched vegetables such as spinach, courgette or shelled peas. Feed small portions several times a day rather than one large meal. Rich, fatty animal-based foods should be used sparingly, as an inappropriate diet can contribute to digestive problems commonly associated with mbuna.

Which tankmates are suitable for Daktari Cichlids?

Suitable companions include other robust Lake Malawi mbuna of comparable size and temperament, such as yellow labs, rusties, acei and selected Pseudotropheus or Chindongo species. Stocking should be planned carefully, with plenty of rockwork and enough females to distribute male attention. Avoid peaceful community fish, slow-moving species, delicate cichlids and similarly coloured males that may receive excessive aggression. Do not combine them with Tanganyikan or South American cichlids simply because their water chemistry is similar.

How can Daktari Cichlids be bred successfully?

Daktari Cichlids are maternal mouthbrooders and will usually breed readily in a mature Malawi setup. Keep one male with several females to spread his attention. The male displays around a suitable rock or cave, while the female collects the fertilised eggs and incubates them in her mouth for around three weeks. She releases free-swimming fry that can be raised on finely crushed flakes, baby brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods.

How can male and female Daktari Cichlids be distinguished?

Males are generally larger and develop blue or blue-grey colouration with more pronounced dark barring, while females are commonly yellow to golden and smaller-bodied. Colour can vary considerably between strains, ages and individual fish, so venting or breeding behaviour may be needed for certainty in less typical specimens.
