What makes Celestial Eye Goldfish distinctive?

Celestial Eye Goldfish are an unusual fancy variety recognised by their upward-facing, telescope-like eyes. Their eyes point toward the surface rather than projecting sideways, giving the fish a distinctive expression and helping distinguish them from ordinary telescope-eye goldfish. They are commonly seen with rounded bodies, flowing fins and colour patterns ranging from orange and red to white, calico and combinations of these shades.

Like other fancy goldfish, they are generally peaceful and sociable, but their specialised body shape and vision make them slower and less agile than streamlined single-tailed goldfish. They spend much of their time exploring the lower and middle parts of the aquarium and searching for food.

The celestial-eye form is entirely the result of domestication. It belongs to the long history of ornamental goldfish development in East Asia, where breeders selected striking body shapes, fin forms, colours and eye types from ordinary goldfish.

Their upward-pointing eyes are delicate and can be damaged by rough ornaments, aggressive companions or competition from faster fish. This feature also means that Celestial Eye Goldfish benefit from a calm, thoughtfully arranged aquarium where they can find food without being outcompeted.

Where did Celestial Eye Goldfish originate?

Celestial Eye Goldfish are a selectively bred ornamental variety of Carassius auratus, descended from wild goldfish and crucian carp relatives native to East Asia. The variety itself does not have a natural wild range and was developed through generations of goldfish breeding in Asia, particularly China and Japan.

What water temperature suits Celestial Eye Goldfish?

Celsius: 1824 °C
Fahrenheit: 6575 °F

Which pH range is best for Celestial Eye Goldfish?

Ideal pH: 6.08.0

How many Celestial Eye Goldfish should live together?

Keep at least 2 together for best welfare and natural behaviour.

How should a Celestial Eye Goldfish aquarium be set up?

Plan for at least 150 litres for one adult Celestial Eye Goldfish, with additional volume for each extra fish; a long aquarium of around 120 cm or more is preferable to a tall, narrow tank. Use efficient biological and mechanical filtration with gentle, well-distributed circulation, while avoiding currents strong enough to exhaust this less agile variety. Choose smooth sand or rounded fine gravel and leave open swimming and feeding areas. Decor should be stable and free of sharp edges, with hardy plants such as Anubias or Java fern attached to ornaments, as delicate rooted plants may be uprooted during foraging. A secure lid is useful because goldfish can jump, and regular maintenance is essential because they produce substantial waste.

How large do Celestial Eye Goldfish become?

Up to about 15 cm (6 in) in body length is typical for a well-kept adult, although exceptionally large individuals may approach 20 cm (8 in) including the tail. Females are often slightly larger and deeper-bodied than males.

What should Celestial Eye Goldfish eat?

Celestial Eye Goldfish are omnivores and should receive a varied diet based on high-quality sinking goldfish pellets or gel food, which allows them to feed comfortably without relying on floating food. Supplement this with blanched vegetables such as peas, spinach and courgette, plus occasional frozen or live foods including brine shrimp, daphnia and bloodworms. Feed small portions that are consumed promptly, as goldfish are enthusiastic feeders and excess food can quickly pollute the water.

Which tankmates are compatible with Celestial Eye Goldfish?

Suitable companions include other similarly sized fancy goldfish, such as Orandas, Ranchus, Fantails and Ryukins, provided the aquarium is spacious and well filtered. White Cloud Mountain Minnows and other small fish are generally poor choices because they may compete aggressively for food or be swallowed as goldfish grow. Avoid tropical species requiring much warmer water, fin-nipping fish, large predators and fast single-tailed goldfish such as Commons, Comets and Shubunkins, which can outcompete this slower variety. Celestial Eye Goldfish should also not be housed with fish that may damage their delicate eyes or fins.

How can Celestial Eye Goldfish be bred successfully?

Celestial Eye Goldfish are egg scatterers that usually breed when mature fish experience excellent conditioning followed by a gradual seasonal rise in temperature. Provide dense fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for the adhesive eggs, feed the adults generously with varied foods beforehand, and remove the adults after spawning because they will eat the eggs. The eggs generally hatch within several days, and the tiny fry require very small foods such as infusoria or commercially prepared fry food before progressing to baby brine shrimp.

How can male and female Celestial Eye Goldfish be identified?

Mature females are usually fuller through the abdomen, particularly when carrying eggs, while males tend to be slimmer. In breeding condition, males may develop fine white tubercles on the gill covers and leading edges of the pectoral fins, and may chase females; outside the breeding season, the sexes can be difficult to distinguish.
