Candy Striped Pleco L015 Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Candy Striped Pleco is a handsome armoured catfish with a compact, broad-bodied shape and a striking pattern of pale cream to golden bands crossing a dark brown or black base colour. The exact pattern varies between individuals, and the contrast often becomes more impressive as the fish matures. Its flattened underside and sucker-shaped mouth are characteristic adaptations for life on the riverbed.

The Candy Striped Pleco L015 is native to the Rio Tapajós basin in Brazil, South America. It comes from clear to tea-coloured tributaries and rocky river habitats with submerged wood, caves and strong oxygenation.

A single Candy Striped Pleco should have at least a 120-litre aquarium, ideally measuring around 90 cm long by 40 cm wide or larger; a bigger footprint is preferable for multiple individuals. Use efficient filtration and strong oxygenation while avoiding excessively turbulent flow across every resting area. Provide smooth rocks, sturdy bogwood or driftwood, shaded retreats and several caves, with fine sand or smooth gravel that will not damage the underside. Leave open surfaces for foraging and arrange decor securely, as these powerful catfish can shift light objects.

Up to about 14 cm (5.5 in) in total length; males are often slightly larger and more robust than females.

Candy Striped Plecos are omnivorous grazers that feed on biofilm, algae, plant matter, small invertebrates and organic material in nature. Offer a varied diet of sinking algae wafers, quality catfish pellets, blanched courgette, cucumber, spinach or leafy greens, supplemented occasionally with foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp or insect-based pellets. Feed after lights-out or provide food in shaded areas so the pleco is not outcompeted, and remove uneaten vegetables before they decay.

Candy Striped Plecos are generally peaceful community fish and can be kept with similarly peaceful tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, peaceful gouramis and other non-aggressive bottom dwellers. They are best kept singly unless the aquarium is spacious and offers plenty of separate caves, as males may become territorial toward one another and other plecos. Avoid large, aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species and overcrowding around the bottom of the aquarium.

Candy Striped Plecos are cave-spawning catfish that can breed in a mature aquarium when well conditioned with varied, nutritious foods. Provide several snug caves made from ceramic, slate or smooth wood, with entrances only slightly larger than the fish. The male typically claims a cave, attracts a female and guards the adhesive eggs until they hatch. Strong filtration, excellent water quality and a gradual increase in fresh, slightly cooler water can help stimulate spawning. The fry can be offered finely crushed algae-based foods and other suitable bottom-feeding foods once they become free-swimming.

Mature males are usually broader-headed and develop more pronounced odontodes, or bristle-like tooth structures, along the cheeks and pectoral-fin spines. Females tend to have a rounder body, especially when carrying eggs, and usually show fewer cheek odontodes.
