Bocourti Cichlid Care Guide - Size, Setup & Breeding

The Bocourti Cichlid is a large, deep-bodied Central American cichlid with a powerful profile and a distinctive mature colour pattern. Adults typically show a golden yellow to olive body marked with darker vertical bars, while the head and throat can develop rich orange, copper or reddish tones. The fins are often edged in blue or turquoise, adding contrast to this imposing fish.

Young Bocourti Cichlids are generally more muted and heavily barred than adults. Their colours and body shape change substantially as they mature, with established adults becoming fuller-bodied and more vividly marked. Colour intensity varies with age, mood, social status and breeding condition.

In the wild, this species lives around sheltered margins, submerged wood, rocks and other structure in warm freshwater habitats. It is an active, observant fish that spends much of its time investigating its surroundings and defending a chosen area rather than moving constantly through open water.

Bocourti Cichlids are intelligent and highly individual in behaviour. They may recognise their keeper and display engaging territorial and parental behaviour, but their size, strength and assertiveness make them a specialist choice for experienced aquarists with room for a large cichlid aquarium.

Bocourti Cichlids are native to the Usumacinta River basin on the Atlantic slope of Central America, occurring in parts of southern Mexico and Guatemala, with populations also associated with the wider region of Belize. They inhabit warm, slow-moving rivers, backwaters and lagoons with rocky, sandy or muddy bottoms.

A single adult Bocourti Cichlid needs at least 450 litres, with a tank measuring approximately 150 cm long by 60 cm wide by 60 cm high; a pair or community requires a substantially larger aquarium. Use powerful, reliable filtration and leave generous open swimming space. Arrange robust rocks, caves and driftwood to create territories, anchoring all heavy décor securely because this species can move or dismantle decorations. A smooth sand or fine-gravel substrate is suitable, with hardy plants used sparingly as they may be uprooted or eaten.

Up to around 40 cm (15.7 inches) in total length. Males are usually larger and more heavily built than females, although aquarium specimens are often smaller depending on diet, genetics and available space.

Bocourti Cichlids are omnivores with a strong preference for meaty and plant-based foods. Offer a varied staple diet of quality large cichlid pellets, supplemented with spirulina or other vegetable-based foods, blanched greens and occasional frozen foods such as prawns, mussel, bloodworm or earthworm. Juveniles need suitably small portions, while adults should receive measured meals to reduce obesity and preserve water quality. Avoid relying on mammal meat, which is difficult for cichlids to digest properly.

Bocourti Cichlids are best kept alone, as a compatible pair, or in a carefully planned large Central American cichlid community. Potential tankmates include robust, similarly sized species such as large Vieja relatives, Parachromis, Amphilophus, Rocio or sturdy large catfish, provided the aquarium is spacious and individual temperaments are suitable. Avoid small fish, peaceful community species, delicate tankmates and similarly aggressive fish that cannot retreat; territorial disputes can become severe, especially during spawning.

Bocourti Cichlids are substrate-spawning, biparental cichlids that form a bonded pair when mature. The female usually deposits several hundred eggs on a flat rock, slate surface or other solid object, after which both parents guard the eggs and fan them with their fins. The eggs generally hatch within a few days, and the free-swimming fry can be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp and other appropriately sized foods. A compatible pair is important, as an unwilling or mismatched partner may be seriously injured.

Males generally grow larger, develop a broader head and more extended dorsal and anal fins, and may show stronger orange, copper and blue colouration. Females are commonly smaller and shorter-finned, with a more compact body, although reliable sexing can be difficult in immature fish.
