Asian Rummynose Care Guide - Aquarium Setup, Diet & Breeding

The Asian Rummynose is a small, elegant cyprinid with a slender, silvery body and a distinctive red-orange snout. Mature males develop stronger colour than females, often showing a blue-green sheen across the body and vivid red markings in the head and fins. Their appearance is unrelated to the South American rummynose tetras, despite the shared common name.

These fish are active but generally peaceful, spending much of their time in the middle and upper levels of the aquarium. In a shoal they display more confident, natural behaviour, with males often holding position and briefly displaying to one another without causing serious injury.

In the wild, Sawbwa resplendens is associated with the unusual aquatic environment of Inle Lake, where floating vegetation, shallow margins and clear, mineral-rich water shape the local fish community. The species is adapted to relatively cool conditions compared with many tropical aquarium fish.

Asian Rummynose have become popular among aquarists seeking a smaller shoaling fish with striking colour and a less commonly seen Asian origin. Their restricted natural distribution also makes responsible sourcing and careful long-term care especially important.

Asian Rummynose are endemic to Inle Lake and nearby waters in Shan State, Myanmar, in Southeast Asia. They inhabit the shallow, clear freshwater habitats associated with this highland lake system.

Provide at least 60 litres for a shoal, with a footprint of approximately 60 x 30 cm or larger. Use a mature, well-filtered aquarium with open swimming space, gentle circulation and dense planting around the sides and rear. Fine sand or smooth dark gravel makes a suitable substrate and helps their colours stand out; floating plants, driftwood and subdued lighting can provide security without filling the central swimming area. Keep the aquarium tightly covered because these active fish may jump.

Asian Rummynose reach a maximum adult length of about 3.5 cm (1.4 in). Males are usually slimmer and may be slightly smaller, while females tend to have a deeper body and can approach the upper end of the species’ size range.

This omnivorous species accepts quality small granules and finely crushed flake, supplemented with frozen or live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, baby brine shrimp and bloodworm. Offer small portions that the fish can consume quickly, as their small mouths suit frequent modest meals better than large pieces of food. A varied diet helps maintain their colour and supports breeding condition.

Asian Rummynose are peaceful community fish and can be kept with other calm, similarly sized species. Suitable companions include small rasboras, peaceful danios, dwarf Corydoras, small non-aggressive loaches and gentle hillstream fish where water requirements overlap. Avoid large, predatory or boisterous species, fin-nippers and warm-water fish that require substantially higher temperatures. They should not be housed with aggressive cichlids or other fish likely to outcompete them for food.

Asian Rummynose are egg-scattering fish that can be bred in a mature, species-focused aquarium. Condition a group with small live or frozen foods, then provide fine-leaved plants or spawning mops for the eggs to land among. Spawning usually takes place among vegetation, with the adults showing little parental care and likely to eat the eggs. Remove the adults or transfer the spawning material to a separate container, and raise the fry on infusoria or other microscopic foods before offering newly hatched brine shrimp.

Males are more vividly coloured, with a pronounced red snout, stronger blue-green body sheen and brighter fin markings. Females are generally plainer, fuller-bodied and rounder through the abdomen, particularly when carrying eggs.
