What are Albino Bristlenose Plecos like?

The Albino Bristlenose Pleco is a pale, golden-yellow to creamy-white colour form of the familiar bristlenose catfish. Its body is covered in protective bony plates, while its underside is adapted for clinging to solid surfaces and rasping at food with a specialised sucker mouth. Red or pink eyes are a characteristic feature of the albino form.

As they mature, males develop a remarkable fringe of fleshy bristles across the snout and around the front of the head. Females may have a few short bristles around the lip, but they are usually much less pronounced. Despite their unusual appearance, these catfish are generally peaceful and spend much of their time attached to wood, rocks, aquarium glass or broad plant leaves.

Wild Ancistrus inhabit flowing streams, forest waterways and river margins, where submerged wood, stones and leaf litter create shelter and feeding surfaces. Their flattened shape and armour-like plates help them negotiate currents and avoid many predators.

They are primarily active during the evening and at night, although individuals often become accustomed to daytime activity in aquariums. Albino Bristlenose Plecos are not true algae-cleaning machines, but their grazing behaviour and distinctive appearance make them popular and useful members of a peaceful freshwater community.

Where do Albino Bristlenose Plecos originate?

Albino Bristlenose Plecos are an aquarium-bred colour form of Ancistrus sp., a group of bristlenose catfish native to tropical freshwater habitats in South America. The exact wild origin of many aquarium strains is uncertain because Ancistrus are traded under several locality and hybrid names.

What water temperature suits Albino Bristlenose Plecos?

Celsius: 2228 °C
Fahrenheit: 7282 °F

Which pH range is best for Albino Bristlenose Plecos?

Ideal pH: 6.57.5

How many Albino Bristlenose Plecos should live together?

Can be kept singly — this species does not require a group.

What aquarium setup do Albino Bristlenose Plecos need?

A single Albino Bristlenose Pleco should have an aquarium of at least 80 litres, with a footprint of around 90 by 30 cm; a larger tank is needed for several adults or a breeding group. Use smooth sand or fine rounded gravel, sturdy driftwood, rocks and caves or tubes that provide secure daytime retreats. Good filtration, oxygenation and moderate current are beneficial, while hardy plants and shaded areas help recreate the sheltered structure of their natural habitat.

How large do Albino Bristlenose Plecos grow?

Males can reach approximately 15 cm (6 in) in length, while females usually grow to around 12 cm (4.7 in).

What should Albino Bristlenose Plecos eat?

Offer a varied, mainly herbivorous diet of algae wafers, spirulina-based foods and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber, spinach and shelled peas. Driftwood is valuable because Ancistrus rasp at it as part of their natural feeding behaviour. Supplement occasionally with sinking foods containing protein, such as catfish pellets or frozen bloodworm, especially for young, breeding or growing fish, but do not rely on algae in the aquarium alone.

Which tankmates work well with Albino Bristlenose Plecos?

Albino Bristlenose Plecos are suitable companions for peaceful community fish such as tetras, rasboras, danios, livebearers, dwarf gouramis, peaceful barbs and small Corydoras. They can also be kept with other calm bottom-dwellers when the aquarium provides enough hiding places and territory. Avoid aggressive cichlids, fin-nipping species and large predatory fish, as well as keeping multiple mature males in a cramped aquarium because they may become territorial toward one another.

How can you breed Albino Bristlenose Plecos?

Albino Bristlenose Plecos are cave-spawning catfish that can be bred in a mature aquarium. Provide a snug clay or ceramic cave, where the male will attract a female, guard the eggs and fan them with his fins. The eggs usually hatch after several days, and the fry can be raised on soft vegetables, algae-based foods and other suitable fry foods. Remove potential predators and ensure excellent water quality while the young develop.

How can you distinguish male and female Albino Bristlenose Plecos?

Males develop much larger, branched bristles across the snout and head, often extending well above the mouth. Females are generally rounder-bodied and either lack bristles or have only small ones around the lip.
